The Vatican has published a controversial document that said the only full true Church created by Christ was the Catholic faith. Running to 15 pages and issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, formally headed by Pope Benedict when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, it also said other faiths suffered from 'defects'.

The paper emphasised the closeness with the Orthodox faiths and said they were true churches but were suffering from a wound as they did not recognise the primacy of the Pope. However, it said the 'wound is still more profound' in the Protestant denominations - a statement that is likely to deepen the rift with Protestants.

Do you think it`s a form of bigotry for the pope to say other Christian religions outside of Catholicism are not true Christians?

But,
Given that it is a form of bigotry, or chauvanism really---

So what?
they have done nothing but revealed their belief that they alone know the way to god and heaven...

Ignorance can come in many forms....

next please.

Yes, but all sects of all religions say the same thing about all other sects of all other religions, so it doesn't really mean much.

Maybe that's MOSTLY true between different religions. But not ALL sects within a religion. I'm sure many Christian groups would be happy to call Catholics etc. Christians.

I was raised Catholic, and I have to say that I don't buy into all that crap. The pope is just a man, no better than you or I.

Honestly, if you look back in history, the Catholic church is responsible for more killings and had it's hands in more wars than seems logical.

It's hypocrisy at its best and many religions, not just Catholicism, are ate up with it.

Yes, it is. I think this Pope wants to do more harm than good when it comes to uniting people of all religions.

Oh, come on! Catholics, most Christians became Protestants because you guys were unfair. It was 1000 years ago! Get over it!

If Catholics believe in Christ, doesn't that make all Catholics Christian?
14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 12/2/07 - 10:11:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Would you really expect the Pope to say "Catholicism is true, but if you folks want to believe otherwise, thats cool too, it doesn't matter"?

Yes, but the Pope is saying that other "Christians" are not really Christians because they aren't Catholic.

The dogma of religion is so ridiculous. No one who conforms to such a strict system just because they're told to can be considered a 'true' anything.

Well, I guess so. All Christians follow God, etc.

Catholics and Christians are two different groups.

I've seen a good number of YTers claim that Catholics (and usually Mormons as well) aren't Christians.

We've got prejudiced idiots on all sides. It's a pity that the current leader of the Catholic faith is one of the prejudiced idiots.

Well, 'yes' but it's his job, really. He's not going to pretend that all other denominations of Christianity, and all other faiths are equal or something. Because, from his point of view, they're not.

No. Christianity includes Catholics, Orthodox and all Protestant/Anglican subgroups.

But not Jehovah witnesses and Mormons.

^^Not according to some Christian faiths. Since Mormons also worship from another book technically they aren't Christians because that's a step away from worshiping an idol or something.

The Catholic Bible and the version that Protestants use have slightly different books too. I wouldn't say that makes either one non-Christian.

I don't really know too much about Mormonism but I wouldn't claim that an additional few books means anything

As a Catholic, I will just say I liked Pope John Paul II's teachings and relations to other religions more.
