Canadian city cops are trying to find a way to accept text messages to the 911 emergency dispatch system. `We have an obligation to keep up with technology,` said Staff Sgt. Blair Edl, head of the communications section for the Edmonton Police Service. Edl figures in emergency situations, such as a school shooting, students might not be able to make a call from a cellphone because of fears of being overheard, but they could text-message police with valuable information.
Right now, neither the city police`s emergency dispatch nor the general complaint line can accept text messages, said Edl. A 911 text could be sent to a general police e-mail address, but that wouldn`t get checked on an emergency basis, he added. `It may be that they only have access to text messaging,` said Edl. `We need to look at how we`re going to deal with that. It`s not something where we can just flip a switch.`
