Men: Would you watch your woman do this?

When a baby is born by caesarean, the hands that lift it from the womb to the world usually belong to an obstetrician. But now, there's someone else who can help deliver the baby: the mother. Called 'assisted caesarean', the procedure allows the mother to be the first to hold her child, with her hands guided into the womb by medical staff...

I don't think I would ever have a C-section.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 4/25/07 - 7:32:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've never had children, and I certainly wouldn't do it that way if I did.
15 yrs ago - Tuesday 5/15/07 - 7:21:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
Freaky....
And I'd prefer to give birth the natural way.
15 yrs ago - Tuesday 5/15/07 - 8:44:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, if I had to have a C-section not a natural birth, I would want to do it the normal way they do it, with an obstetrician.
15 yrs ago - Tuesday 5/15/07 - 9:26:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
If, and only IF it was absolutely medically necessary to both of our lives to perform a cesarean, I would totally do it.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/16/07 - 2:11:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. I would never want a C-section unless it is an emergency reason that caused it. And I'd rather have the baby, let the medical staff take the baby to check to make sure baby is OK and clean him/her up then I'd hold my baby.

I don't think I could do that. The thought of putting my own hands in my womb makes me feel kind of nauseated.
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Monday 6/4/07 - 4:33:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
The thought of a gaping hole in my stomach region would somewhat lessen the joy of holding my child.

i am a professional in many areas, shopping, watching tv, but NOT giving birth. i will pass

In most cases you don't get a choice, apart from the people who elect to have one, which doesn't happen much in the uk, and those who do don't deserve kids anyway, if you can't distrupt your life enough to let the child be born when its ready then you are really not ready to be a parent.

Plus the best thing about child birth is all the drugs, why would you want to be awake enough to reach inside yourself!

14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/19/07 - 5:05:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
If my wife wanted it, I really really wouldn't care.
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/19/07 - 5:15:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
Wow, can you imagine reaching into your stomach? That's kind of like some horror film. Well, I guess childbirth is pretty horrible to begin with.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 6/29/07 - 6:57:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
Eww, that is so creepy, who would want to do that - I see the immediate romantic thought of being the first to touch the baby, but I'd rather skilled people take care of it...
Besides a C-section like that would have to be planned in advance, and I'd never do that...
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/11/07 - 12:21:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
i dunno..it'd be kinda neat, but I wouldn't have a c section unless it was an emergency, and with that i'd rather the doctors and nurses do their thing to get the baby out and safe...not me gettin my arms all in the way :S
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/11/07 - 12:22:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would imagine that would take a special brand of woman.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/11/07 - 12:42:43 AM EST (GMT-5)
No way that is just creepy!
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/11/07 - 12:45:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
Um... If I had to have a C-section I might do it, but if normal birth is possible, that's the way I'd go.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/11/07 - 1:07:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
If I need a C-section, I would have one in an instant but a traditional one. Frankly, refusing to have a C-section if necessary seems cruel
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/4/07 - 6:52:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well. I'll be having nightmares tonight.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/14/07 - 5:39:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
Scarey, it would just have to stay in there, there's no way i'm putting my hands in my own stomach or whatever you want to call it! :-p
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/14/07 - 6:42:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ummm, no. I don;t want to pull a human being out of my own body.
14 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 11/1/07 - 7:39:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
That'd be a neat experience, but I think I'll pass.
14 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 11/1/07 - 7:50:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
how gruesome.
i think i'd pass on the chance to "be the first to hold my child". i'd have been "holding" it exclusively for the past 9 months anyway.
14 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 11/2/07 - 2:18:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
Never, ever would I reach into my own cut-open stomach and pull my baby out... Sick.
14 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 3/13/08 - 3:43:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
I really wanted a natural birth, but had to have an emergency c-section. It's such an impersonal proceedure. I was so incredibly exhausted from the hours of labor beforehand and I was hopped up on drugs that when he actually came out and I heard him cry... I couldn't cry myself. Even though I wanted to.

After my husband and son left the room and they took out the placenta and sewed me up, I was in the recovery room and they tried to get me to breastfeed and hold the baby. I couldn't because I was so incredibly weak and out of it because of the drugs. He felt like a ton of bricks on me when he was only just under 9 lbs.

I'm disappointed with our birth experience. Happy that I have a healthy baby though, of course.

I would LOVE to have a home birth with the help of trained professionals. I don't think I could ever do an assisted c-section though. I would be too scared...
