The overwhelming odds point to myself being the person on the giving end of this situation. Shall it rise against me, i will act as if im completely comprehending every syllable out of the persons mouth, effectively defeating ignorance. Or creating it.

In this situation I usually just ask, "what the hell are you talking about?"

It depends on how important it is, and if it's written down.

Depends on the situation. If it's something that could be an important situation then I try to understand as best as I can, maybe asking one question to try to figure out the rest. If it's just small talk from the cash person at the store, meh I don't bother and just smile.

It really depends on the situation and the person. Sometimes I'll ask them, and sometimes I'll just try to figure it out on my own or ask someone I'm more comfortable with.

The only way that would happen would be if we were discussing something involving specialist knowledge I didn't possess. I'm sure, in that case, they'd be willing to explain it to me after I'd finished smiling knowingly and asked them to speak English.
