I don't see why it would be.
15 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 1/26/07 - 10:58:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depends on the family.

For some families, it would be a time for sharing (good), for others, it would be a time for fighting (not so good).

It would be more problimatic to bring religion to someone else's dinner table.

No, not if everyone is participating in the conversation.
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 2/16/07 - 6:29:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not at all. It lets you know who to avoid. I like having an intelligent conversation over dinner, it lets you know a great deal about someone.
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 2/20/07 - 3:02:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't think so, no. No reason for it to be.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/3/07 - 7:40:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
I try not to discuss hot topics with people when I know they disagree with me (many people I know do). It'll just turn into a big argument, and I don't need that.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/3/07 - 7:54:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
No I see nothing wrong with it.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/3/07 - 9:34:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's only bad manners if you don't mind fighting at the dinner table.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/3/07 - 9:56:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. Bad manners for me it's either burping or farting or bad behaviour during dinner.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 3/6/07 - 9:31:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
If there are people you don't know well present, perhaps. Although, I love talking about politics and religion with people I know and would do so at dinner or any other time.
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 3/6/07 - 9:32:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not bad manners, but probably not the smartest thing to do. I guess amongst family its fairly safe, but its a sure fire way to lose friends and aquaintances.
15 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 4/13/07 - 11:46:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think it really depends on the family.
My mother in law can not talk poilitics AT all, so that would not be a suitable dinner topic, but for me and my friends it makes great conversation.
15 yrs ago - Thursday 5/17/07 - 8:50:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depends on who you're eating with.
15 yrs ago - Monday 5/21/07 - 3:19:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
i love those sort of dinner table discussions. especially when everyone has had a bit too much wine and people's wives try shushing them as redfaced men bang their fists on the table yelling at each other.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 6/29/07 - 7:44:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. My family talks about how big an idiot bush is. I would talk about my religious beliefs, but i'll save that for one of my mom's "immoral moments"
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 6/29/07 - 9:13:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Personally, either one of those topics would make me lose my appetite!
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 6/30/07 - 12:44:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
may be you should not talk about it in big formal dinner where everyone trys to be civilized to each other.

i don't mind. i think they're interesting topics.

14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 7/19/07 - 4:23:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
Personally, I don't mind. But I've heard it's kind of a cultural thing. E.g in France this is considered to be *very* unpolite.
*insert random 'rude French' remark here*

I don't think there is such a thing as taboo in the confines of a family. I think the question implies a dinner table with a variety of people and a vriety of levels of intimacy. In that context, I can think of nothing more impolite or likely to cause bad feelings among the company in question than to discuss those things. Sex as well. Absolutely the worst manners possible. The answer is yes and I would have ZERO interest in sharing a meal with anyone who feels otherwise.
14 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 9/29/07 - 9:31:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
I respect my family enough to not feed them information in stuff that they aren't interested in while we could be talking abut something that everyone would be able to relate(don't know if that's the right word) to.
14 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/6/08 - 4:05:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think its bad to talk at the dinner table, im there to eat not talk, stfu!!!
14 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/6/08 - 4:07:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, but if it's not a topic that usually comes up. Although at one of my friends houses her dad and I always get into a political discussion during dinner. Him being a Polish economist, it's interesting to hear his view on different things.

I find it interesting that people assume that people are incapable of discussing religion or politics in a civilized manner. That's actually a pretty scary thought.

Those are like the two most interesting dinner table discussions.
