"There was a girl on the floor," says Campos, who made it to the final five. "She must have been there for an hour with her teeth chattering. They were heckling her." "Your body is 98 percent water," one of the hosts remarked to his on-air audience. "Why can't you take in as much water as you want?" Because, as many of us in the Bay Area learned two years ago, an excess of water creates a physical shutdown. Pleasant Hill college student Matt Carrington died in 2005 of water intoxication in a hazing incident at a Cal State Chico fraternity. In fact, Carrington's case came up on Friday. Someone in the studio mentioned "that poor kid in college," but another DJ responded that Carrington "was doing other things." No, actually, he wasn't. As a listener who identified herself as "Eve" told the morning crew, people "can get sick and possibly die from water intoxication."

"We're aware of that," one jock replied. And another jumped in to wisecrack that everyone in the contest had signed releases, "so we're not responsible." ...What the f*ck? They should be arrested.link

Fire them, suit them and the station, and give the money to the 3 motherless children. Then arrest these guys, but be sure to send them each a Christmas card with the children and the Father in it every year, so they will never forgot what their stupidity caused

Yes. I watched this on the news. They didn't let the woman go to the bathroom and they pretty much took it as a joke. Besides, the effects of water poisoning is largely underestimated. They should have at least contacted a doctor or someone with expertise.

It was dumb of the woman to participate, but the station promoted a dangerous activity without doing anything to ensure the safety of the participants, which should be criminal negligence.

I didn't even have to read the story to remember what happened in this case. No. The dumbkass should have been responsible for herself. It's crap that every "fun" thing that is organized has to gone over with a fine tooth comb for legal reasons. When will the US get sick of it and demand tort reform?

I'm really torn on this issue. They were extremely stupid for having such a contest in the first place. The contestants also should have known better than to participate.

If she hadn't gone to do the contest, then she wouldn't have died, it's not those stupid people's fault, she decided to join in on that contest. But then again, if they hadn't held that contest, she wouldn't have joined it, no one would have. So drat it. I don't care. People are stupid.

its not their fault. they're getting in trouble because they didn't know, but neither did she, so why isn't it her fault? She shouldn't have done the contest.

I'm too lazy to explain, but it has to do with the water you blood cells "take in." The effectually burst from too much water. It's a common thing in athletes who over-drink.
