It applies to both.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/4/06 - 8:45:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
only to animals, we had taken ourselves out of this a while ago.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/4/06 - 8:55:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are yall retarded, ask any science teacher.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/4/06 - 10:20:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
Both says Biology.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 12/5/06 - 1:33:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
It used to apply to humans, but we're so technologically advance that it doesn't matter anymore. People who should die, don't.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 12/5/06 - 1:35:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
both
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 12/5/06 - 1:40:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually, I'd say it doesn't really apply to either anymore. We now have technology to help both people and animals with otherwise unbearable medical conditions to live, and perhaps even reproduce. We can fix some minor genetic disabilities and diseases to the point where they make no difference; e.g. people with bad eyesight are not selected against, because they just wear glasses or contacts. It's not survival of the fittest anymore; it's something completely different.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 12/5/06 - 1:49:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Applies to both, stupid people doing stupid things kill themselves all the time . Darwinism in action.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/15/06 - 1:41:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
it aplies to animals definatly. tne human condition has started to "help" us out of it. medicene and equal rights ensure everyone has a chance in life.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/15/06 - 1:51:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
It still applies to both humans and animals (also, lets not forget that humans are animals). While technology including the green revolution and medicine have changed the selective pressures that humans undergo, they have not eliminated them.

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/15/06 - 1:54:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh ffs, they're BOTH animals. It applies to both, and besides, haven't you heard the term 'social Darwinism?' That's 'survival of the fittest' with humans right there.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/15/06 - 1:55:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
Both I think.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 11:54:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well, it certainly doesn't apply to us physically anymore. Now we have "survival of the coolest." (Mind you, I use the word COOL for lack of a better one. I hope you know what I mean by it.)

So now, if you are 'cool' enough, you survive socially in the human environment. Those who are 'uncool' socially 'starve' and are thus thrown out.

It certainly applies to humans, it's now simply a psychological thing.

15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:01:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
People seem to forget that half of the world is third-world. There is certainly still survival of the fittest going on there.

and I also agree that we still have "survival of the coolest/smartest"/ social Darwinism going on.

15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:07:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Social Darwinism is one of the most intellectually and morally bankrupt ideas of the 19th century and should not be tolerated in any modern day conversation.

obviously, but in this sense I (and I assume we) just mean that the people most fit psychologically survive.

15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:11:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
or procreate that is.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:13:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
actually, your right. I used the term wrong, it sounded like I was saying that Africans are dying because they are inferior. I meant people individually, in the first world.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:14:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
What the hell does that even mean? Who decides the criteria? You mean we should kill crazy/retarded people, or stupid/uncool people are somehow worth less than others?
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:15:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you're talking about that we still judge people based on who's the strongest/smartest/most popular, then obviously your right, people will always try and put a class system into place, that doesn't make it right though. I also don't think that makes it anything like 'survival of the fittest'.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:16:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
Of course not. You're missing this completely. It's just the fact that people who are "uncool" or retarded are less likely to find a mate and have kids. Their genes are less likely to get passed on.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:17:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
For example a person w/ schizophrenia is less likely to ever get married and have kids. It's theres no 'should' about it. They are just less likely, because they aren't as fit for our environment.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:17:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, you're right about that, that goes back to our instincts and what we look for in a mate.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:18:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Exactly, and that is survival of the fittest.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/12/07 - 12:18:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
I understand you better now, and you're right.
