Currently, most airlines oversell their flights by two or three seats, betting on the statistic that two to three people usually don't show up for the flight. But when everyone who did buy a ticket shows up, then they have to bump the last people to get to the gate, even if they bought their tickets months earlier. They do this to save costs, but is it worth the savings to always wonder if your tickets will work for you?

No! This happened to me when my tour group was coming home from France when we had to take a connecter from Ohio. France Air overbooked our flight about 8 people. There wasn't going to be another flight until much later. Fortunatly we all got seats on the plane we were scheduled for, but it was such a pain in the butt. None of us wanted to stay in that airport overnight.

No, because even if someone doesn't show up for it, there is always someone else waiting on stand by it seems. So, it's not as if they'd be losing money.

Sure, as long as it gets me a free one.

No, they shouldn't. It's stressing out the people who have to travel.

To me, it's the same principle as doctors overbooking their time slots with two or more people. I don't think it's right.

No. It's a hassle to those who are traveling.
I remember last summer when Northwestern overbooked my connecting flight. We were an hour late leaving,w which meant that those who had a 6:15 (I think) flight missed it.
So, no airlines should not be able to overbook.

No, it can turn things into a huge hassle, especially if you got your tickets months in advance.

No. Airlines treat customers like cattle.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 1/10/07 - 12:27:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, they shouldn't. They're just creating stress for the travelers and the company.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 1/10/07 - 1:34:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, but hotels do, restaurants do, and I'm sure many more that I can't think of right now.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 1/10/07 - 12:04:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, that's rubbish. If you pay for a flight you should be guaranteed one.

Airlines suck, they make you wait hours cause they are overbooked, not for the other bogus reasons they give you.
15 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 4/29/07 - 11:07:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. Thats an awful way to try to save money

This is why I always get to the airport a little bit early... flights are constantly overbooked.

But from a business perspective, it does make sense.
