Who knows? If I'd lived then I'd have been a totally different person with different beliefs. I might have believed slavery was ok.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 2:57:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
Certainly the North, I think even being back then that I still would have enough sense to realize that enslaving people was wrong.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 9:58:56 PM EST (GMT-5)

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 10:03:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
The South most definantly, my county, where my family lived even then, voted unanomously to secede.

Many people in the north didn't see slavery as wrong. Most everybody in the US at that time felt that blacks were inferior.

Second the war was not fought over slavery.

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 10:11:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
the confederacy, because of state rights and the style of life( other than slavery )

hmm, there is another question like this aint it?? sure i've answered this before

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 10:19:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
This is impossible to answer. It would depend almost entirely on where you lived and how you were raised.

Sure, we'd all like to say we'd be moral and thus oppose slavery in all forms, but...we don't really know how we'd behave had we been brought up in different times with different cultural norms.

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/9/06 - 6:45:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
The North, because that's where I was born.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 12/10/06 - 9:44:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
Second the war was not fought over slavery.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
*takes deep breath*
God, I love Southern idiots.
It was one of the reasons the war was fought.

And I don't know. It depends on where I was born and my family's beliefs,

Yes slavery does fall under state rights. It was one of them, a big one but still there were plenty of others.

South, I am not going to fight for the blood lust an a war-mongering Republican President, in a war that he started, in spite of the disapproval of the people.

if slavery was one of the primary reasons for fighting the war, you would think that Lincoln would have freed the slaves that were under his control, but did he? no, the emancipation proclamation only applied to the states that he didn't control assuming that the north won, it was just a ploy to get the slaves on his side.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/11/06 - 10:08:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh, come on Rais, Lincoln just wanted to free the slaves... just like that Bleed-heart Bush wanted to save the people of Iraq Don't question nightgoddess and her Republican buddies, they always do the right thing...
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 12/11/06 - 10:10:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Probably the North, because that's where I live.

Slavery, Communism, Terrorism, it is all the same, Tinsley, it is a scapegoat that allows the president to do what we wants, when he wants, and how he wants to do it. And these boobs eat it up: "What? Indoctrination? Propaganda? WHERE!? Letme at it!"

I'd be neutral. Considering the fact that I'm from Greece and this question is targetted for Americans I'd say that I'd probably be living in Greece back then as well.

No, most people already realize that fact. Especially since EVERY time this war is mentioned, you get into a 15 page argument about how the war wasn't about slavery.

However, that doesn't make any statement, including mine, about personal views on slavery possibly influencing one's choice on sides in the war any less valid. The war was fought over many things, slavery being one of them.

I won't say slavery didn't play its part. But I believe most people who fought for the south, did it because it was their home.

Strictly speaking, slavery WAS spelled out in the constitution.

Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution:
Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.

Article 4 Section 2:
No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, But shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.
