I think it is human nature to be curious, and many people are curious about drugs so yes.

It's human nature to be curious about drugs and what it's like to take them.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 8/26/06 - 3:20:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. But to want to feel good and, as LiLiPat said, curiosity are both normal, and drugs tend to fulfill both those desires.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 8/26/06 - 3:20:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, it's not in my nature at all.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 8/26/06 - 3:24:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
This is a stupid question. Are you referring to halucinagens, or perscription drugs? Either way the answer is obviously no. in the early 1900's no one took drugs or felt the need to. I know many people that are still the same.

Aldous Huxley said it pretty well:

"That humanity at large will ever be able to dispense with Artificial Paradises seems very unlikely. Most men and women lead lives at the worst so painful, at the best so monotonous, poor and limited that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves if only for a few moments, is and has always been one of the principal appetites of the soul. Art and religion, carnivals and saturnalia, dancing and listening to oratory—all these have served, in H. G. Wells's phrase, as Doors in the Wall. And for private, far everyday use there have always been chemical intoxicants. All the vegetable sedatives and narcotics, all the euphorics that grow on trees, the hallucinogens that ripen in berries or can be squeezed from roots—all, without exception, have been known and systematically used by human beings from time immemorial."

"The urge to transcend self-conscious selfhood is, as I have said, a principal appetite of the soul. When, for whatever reason, men and women fail to transcend themselves by means of worship, good works and spiritual exercises, they are apt to resort to religion's chemical surrogates."

It's definitely human nature to want to try new things and to understimate the consequences.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 8/26/06 - 3:53:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, but it is human naute to be happy and some people think that drugs may be a way to achieve that. Medicinal drugs on the other hand I would see as a part of human nature in the effort to promote survival.

It is in human nature to be addicted to something. Everyone is an addict in some way, shape, or form. Just some of us are addicted to things that are better for us. Drugs is just a very easy addiction. You can find them just about anywhere.

It's in their nature to want to minimise pain and maximise happiness, even only for a short term. Thus, people find it in drugs (abuse and non-abuse).

However, most drugs are not natural, but manufactured and thus man-made. So desire to take drugs cannot be intrinsic in itself - but mostly based on its availability.

People took plenty of drugs then ...

Anyway, the question was originally "Is it in human nature to take drugs," not "want to take".

In 1900, what I know for sure off the top of my head is that alcohol, opium, cocaine, and morphine (invented in 1874) were all widely abused. The last three were advertised as having medical value.

No, I really don't think so. I think it is human nature to be stupid, though.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 8/27/06 - 5:58:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
In a way. It's human nature to want to escape.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 8/31/06 - 7:31:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's not human nature. It's human stupidity.
Contrary to popular belief, most people in the world do not take drugs.

I beg to differ, have you ever heard of coffee or alcohol. I would say a good majority of people drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol on a daily basis.

I also don't necessarily see people who try drugs as being stupid. Especially seeing as how without this "human stupidity" as you put it we wouldn't have drugs that cure headaches and we certainly wouldn't be able to perform many types of life saving surgery.

Yes everyone likes to feel good

Please. Practically every culture since the dawn of man has widely abused some kind of drug. Drug use has been a major part of many tribal religions.

Have you ever read The Doors of Perception? It's a pretty interesting read, and it offers a neat perspective on this subject.

You can read it for free at www.druglibrary.org

^ What? I think she was refering to this day and age. I have no need or inclination to take drugs, I am not curious as to the effects because I know of the outcome. Simple as. There are far too many drug addicts and I don't think it's human nature at all.

She can't have been referring to only this day and age because human nature goes back to the beginning of humankind.

You don't take drugs? Does that mean that you've never taken advil to get rid of a headache, you've never taken cough syrup when you were sick, or had a cup of coffee, or a drink of alcohol? That seems highly unlikely to me.
