Police have shut down makeshift Muslim prayer rooms at Paris' two main airports after they came under scrutiny following a far-right politician's allegations that Islamists were compromising security. Officials insist there was no threat. But the prayer sites set up by Muslim workers in cloak rooms, depots and other areas at Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports were quietly shuttered. There are three official prayer rooms still open at each airport, just as there are chapels for Christians and synagogues for Jews.

No.

Equal rights, regardless of religion. Period.

I never knew that there was such a thing.

If you shut down the Muslim prayer rooms then you shut down the Christian Chapels as well. When will the fear-mongers realize that Muslim does not equal terrorist. In exactly the same way that Homosexual does not equal Paedophile. There are bad people in every religion and race, but there are many more good.

I agree.

I don't get why almost everyone seems to think if you're muslim or a middle east decendant that you are a terrorist. It's so fxcking stupid, and i'm getting really tired of it. So no. If we barred them from praying safely and legally at the goddamn AIRPORT then we should barr everyone else from doing the same, no matter the religion.

No, of course not.

Well, no. What good would come of it?

But are there chapels at airports? I've never seen one..

15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 8/21/06 - 6:06:41 AM EST (GMT-5)
Me neither.....maybe that's my problem with flying. I haven't had a good long pray beforehand??

Not here I don't think. I've never seen one at Tullamarine, but I've seen one at Heathrow. Or was it Gatwick?

Many people are stupid. And many are paranoid. A few are both. And some of these enter politics, where they're allowed to make decicions like this.

I think all airports here have one somewhere.

There is one in the airport of Belgium.

No way. Doing things like that would only stir up more resentment in the Muslim world.

It's says that the official prayer room is still open, along with a chapel for the christians and a synagogue for the jewish people. They only shut down the unofficial prayer rooms that the muslim workers had in the coat rooms and other places.

I don't have any problem with that, nobody needs more than one prayer room or chapel.

Under these circumstances, the authorities did the right thing.
If there is already a prayer room set up, they needn't have covert ones in closets and so on. That goes for all faiths, not just the Muslims.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 8/21/06 - 11:19:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
They should shut down all prayer rooms. How often do you really need to pray? If you really want to pray, just go in a corner or something.

Yeah, that makes it a little more understandable. I guess you could then ask, "What about all the unofficial Christian and Jewsih prayer locations?" but Christians and to the best of my knowledge, Jews, too, do not require any special accomodations for prayer or worship. They can do so in any chair, among other places. I would think Muslims would be allowed to do so on a piece of floor out of the way of foot traffic, but I can understand how airport security might prefer that such places either be official places or visible places.

Let's also not ignore the fact that there are no Christian or Jewish organizations involved in widespread, collusive terrorism in the name of their religion, wither.

I fly a lot and been to a lot of airports, and I've never seen any kind of prayer room. Maybe they are kind of hidden and you have to ask or something.

Did either of you bother to read the article?

The religion doesn't have anything to do with the war. That is a stereotype. People who think this way do not know anything about what the religion is.

You know... the question doesn't really fit with the article. It was an unofficial prayer room. The question just asks if the prayer rooms in general should be shut down

15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 9/29/06 - 1:34:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think said politician was paranoid and prejudiced. If they shut down the Muslim prayer room, they should also shut down the Christian Chapel, Jewish Synagogue, and Atheist lounge.
