ABC executives have held discussions with the people providing consumers with DVRs about a potential future feature for the devices that would disable the ad-skipping. ABC President of Advertising Sales Mike Shaw feels that everyone on the ad-delivery side of the equation, from networks to cable operators, should be on the side of no-DVR-skippage since they all rely on selling ads. He doesn't think this is going to be a big deal for consumers, since they'll still be so happy the can easily record their shows for later that they'll barely notice and definitely won't be part of any backlash. This despite frequent assertions that most people considering DVRs are doing so for the ad-skipping feature.

Do you think people with TiVo and DVRs should have the ad skipping features of their devices taken away?

No way.. Once ads are eliminated there will have to be a new system for marketing,,
Reminds me of that carl sagan book.. Contact.. that guy invents that box that cancels out ads and tele evangelists..

If I paid for the Tivo or DVR, I should have the ability to skip ads. If the networks are so upset about it, they should charge the producers of these items a flat fee per unit that flows down to the consumer. I've heard about having to subscribe to ad cancelling. That's rediculous.

No, if they paid for it they should be able to skip the ads.

Maybe if there weren't 20 minutes of ad per hour of show people wouldn't look for ways to skip it. The ad people do it to themselves.

Good point GoManGo!
Color me stupid, but my parents just bought a DVR and I had no idea there was even an ad-skipping feature. Anyone want to enlighten me on how to use it?

Adapt or die. If the old system no longer works, don't sue someone, find a better way to advertise.

No. Its the company's fault for advertising on tv. Its not like there foced into paying for advertising.

Well, I actually support it. Commercials are what keep our entertainment free, and I would much rather listen to and ignore few commercials than have to pay alot of money for television.

Besides, if there were no commercials, when would we be able to go to the bathroom without missing our favorite shows?

no! we paid for it, we deserve it

No, that's a huge part of the appeal of TiVo and DVRs. And it's not like their existence is causing commercials to be completely unprofitable--lots of people don't have TiVo or DVRs and still watch regular, old-fashioned TV with commercials.

With the DVR you can pause yuor show, or just leave the commercials running.

I don't think so. That would be a main selling point for me and if it were to be taken away I would never buy a tv recorder.

If I paid that much for Tivo and all that crap, they had better let me skip the commercials.
Otherwise, I'd return the machine and cancel the services and watch TV the old fashioned way.

Ever heard of cable? We pay a lot of money for that and still have to watch ads.

They make it seem like the people with TiVo and the like, are no longer watching regular television...
15 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 3/23/07 - 1:26:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
why? i mean, honestly, i have never seen a person watch a comercial and say hey i wanna buy that!!! it usually makes me not want to buy it even more.

i wish people would spend as much time on the comercial as people do for commercials during the superbowl. if all comercials were like that, people wouldnt hate them as much and they wouldnt want Tivo or DVR's as much.

I have DVR and I love it.

You can only fast forward it if it's prerecorded anyways, you can't just skip live tv.

I love my DVR. I'd care less about commercials if they were actually things I want. Bob and his Enzyte? Platic children's toys? Now volume 47? Not so much
