Should police officers that are not on call be exempt from traffic laws normally observed by civilians?

"I know quite a few, when off duty, who can just show their badge to get out of speeding tickets and minor traffic infractions."
THAT doesn't surprise me.

And no, they shouldn't be exempt from traffic laws.
They are citizens when they aren't on duty, law obiding citizens just like everyone else.

O_o

Of course not. But that won't stop them.

The point about the police is that they are civilians like you and I and the law applies to them. Showing their badge to dodge parking tickets etc is a form of corruption - low level I admit but perhaps a thin end of the wedge?

When you grow up next to a Police Station you see how little they respect what they enforce.

I have no problem cutting breaks to all those police officers that pulled me over for doing 70 in a 45 and bought my crying act. Pulled over 6 times for speeding...zero tickets. Hate to sound like an antifeminist, but damn..sometimes I love being a woman.

Why? There supposed to set the example

I think they should go by the laws they enforce when they aren't on duty. Otherwise it's not really fair, they aren't speeding or doing other things because of their job, just because they want to. We have laws for a reason, anyways.

ofcourse not.
that's not right, nor is it fair.

I don't think it's fair, but is it really so different than any other job perk?

The worst thing is when they use their sirens to run red lights. That pisses me off.

Ofcourse not, they are capable of endagering the lives of others and themselves.
14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 1/17/07 - 11:53:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, if they can get away with it, we should too!
14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 1/17/07 - 11:57:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
Probably not.

But I'll be the first to admit I'll show my PD identification to try to get out of a ticket, if I had to.

(That being said, I've never been pulled over, so I can't say I've actually done it.)

But I've seen it happen many a time. And I guarantee 99% of the people bitching about it would do the same, if they had the opportunity.

Well my mom has a friend who's actually a policeman and he had helped with her (speeding) tickets so they would be erased.

I think that there are policemen and women who don't follow the rules.

Of course not!

Stuff like this disgusts me.

And for the record, I've never been pulled over. But if I ever do get pulled over, I am not going to bat my eyes and cry my way out of it. F*ckin cvnts.

They aren't exempt. Police officers get speeding tickets. I am not saying they get them all of the time, but they have received speeding tickets.
