Ummm.... I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that whatever I do say can and probably will offend someone, somehow, someway that I could not possibly even fathom.

Sure, why not? She's a white African-American.

And that shouldn't stop people. We shouldn't live in a world of fear. Yes, she's African-American.

I was saying that mostly to be sarcastic about the world of fear we live in. And really, I have no idea what I would call her, besides white.

Well, technically I suppose she is?
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 4/25/06 - 4:04:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
She's from South Africa?
I didn't know that.
I've always thought she was Caucasian.
*shrugs*
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 4/25/06 - 10:46:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
No.

Even though she is technically "African-American" (if you want to be literal), the term has an entirely different *connotation*.
To use it here would be ridiculous.

There are plenty of Caucasian South Africans.
She's *from* South Africa; it's not part of her heritage (as far as I know).

You got something against white black people?

What does it take for one's homeland to be part of their heritage?

I meant that it's not part of her *racial* makeup.

South Africa is her homeland, but she's not ethnically an "African".

How far back does one's bloodlines have to go to be considered "African"? If her great grandparents grew up in Africa as well as the succeeding generations, she has more 'ties' to Africa than most other people that refer to themselves as African-Americans...

If someone has one black great-grandparent, they're considered black.
As far as I know, this doesn't apply to Charlize.

Lots of Africans are not Black, and lots of Blacks do not consider themselves to be African...

What's your point?

Just so you understand, I'm using the words "African" (the difference between someone who is ethnically African and someone who is merely *from* Africa has already been established) and "black" interchangeably here.

16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 4/25/06 - 11:41:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm basically asking what does it take to be 'ethnically African'? There are people of many different colors in the African population. What makes some of them more 'ethnically African' than others?

16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/26/06 - 12:01:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. It's not based on color..
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/26/06 - 12:25:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
Go back far enough, and we are ALL African.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/26/06 - 12:26:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, but I guess she can be if she wants to be. *shrug*
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/26/06 - 12:37:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
She's not an American citizen, so I just consider her African, not African-American. If she ever becomes and American citizen, then I suppose I would consider her African-American.

I believe that she is a naturalized American citizen...

Wow.. I'm friggen lost with this conversation..
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/26/06 - 1:42:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't really "consider" her race at all. *shurg*

Is she? It doesn't say anything about her being a US citizen in her IMDB profile. Last I heard she was just thinking about becoming a US citizen. But I'm not exactly up on the lives of celebrities, so I really don't know.

If she was born in Africa, she's African.
But if she doensn't have U.S. citizenship then she isn't African-American.

I can't say I am up on celeb lives either, but I did a quick Google and found this page that claims that she is a citizen...
