There was something missing in Wednesday night's South Park, as a title card explained: 'Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohammed on their network.'

It was not a joke. The scene depicting the Islamic prophet handing a football helmet to a character from Family Guy (at least that's how another of the show's title cards put it) really was nixed by Comedy Central. A source close to the show said safety concerns were behind the move.

Earlier this year, Danish newspapers published cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed, sparking deadly riots throughout many Muslim nations. Any rendering of the prophet, even a positive one, is considered blasphemous by Muslims.

Should Comedy Central have censored the image of Mohammed in a recent South Park episode?

I think it was actually pretty funny that they did. It wouldn't have had the same impact.

And Matt and Trey's point was still made - even if you don't see the image of Mohammed.

I don't think their point was made - except the point that people are so scared they will censor themselves to avoid offending people. But I'm not sure if that's the point they were trying to make.

Funny thing is they had an image of Mohammed on the show before. But it was before 9/11 and nobody cared.

Matt and Trey needs some IQ injections.

I don't think they should have censored it, but I'm sure the episodes would have been a little less funny if it wasn't censored.

No. There were plenty of things about South Park Comedy Central could have censored. People have been complaining for years about that show and Comedy Central has reaped the benefits from all the controversy the show generates. Why stop now? To be selective about what you censor shows how weak of a company Comedy Central is. South Park's fans should have thick enough skin to not get offended by now and those who were already offended by the show will not be offended any more. There was no need in censoring the image of Mohammed.

Is it worth risking lives over?

I thought it was funnier that it was censored. I don't honestly care why they did it.

What was their point exactly? That they don't give a damn about the wider ramifications of their influence?

They shouldn't have had to, but it was probably wise that they did.

But I never really liked South Park anyway. Too obvious and crude for my taste.

I've had a few laughs thanks to South Park, but I have never been a fan. I can appreciate irreverance and going for shock value in their place, but that's pretty much all they do.

Same here.

They should be able to have it uncensored if they want, but it was funnier censored

According to Islam, Mohammed should not be depicted. I don't believe in censorship, but there's also such a thing as good taste and Stone and Parker both lack it.

They've mentioned before that they've made fun of other religions before—they've even made fun of Islam before—but this is just soley to be offensive.

Didn't they have an animated Muhammed in another episode? The super best friends one.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/19/06 - 8:39:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't believe in censorship at all. The fact that this episode needs to be censored in the views of many is not anything against the creators of South Park, but more rightly it reflects just how stupid these Islamists are, who don't believe any type of freedom that would cause them to look bad.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/19/06 - 8:40:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it was kind weird. But it did make you think.Curse you south park! Making me think .
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/19/06 - 8:48:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, it really was just perfect. If I had to guess, I'd say the guy at the top censored it was a joke on Matt and Trey.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/19/06 - 9:29:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
I saw the uncensored one somewhere.

It's not really that funny or offensive, well, I don't think so anyway...

The muslims in the middle east should shut up about the muhammed thing. They put a bad light on other muslims around the world by rioting and killing people after someone says that islam is a violent religion. Wel, if you don't want people to say that....
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 9/29/06 - 7:04:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
The Muslims velieve it is unnatural to show mohammed's face, as he's like Jesus to them, and does not have an imperfection such as a FACE.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 9/29/06 - 7:08:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think perhaps all of the show should be censored. But to answer the question, they probably should have given some islamic's tendency to go bezerk everytime they even think someone is being respectful to their guy.
