In 2003 only 28% of high school students attended a daily PE class, the CDC reports. About 38% watched TV for three hours or more each school night. Illinois is the only state that requires PE every day from kindergarten through high school.

Should it be mandatory for schools to have children in a physical education class every day?

Hell no. I think that Gym class is just as pointless as sitting in front of a TV for hours anyway. Children should not be pressured to take Gym.

I think it should be required for a couple of days a week. Not every day though. It would be nice if there was the option to go for more days in the week, but only two or three should be mandatory.

NO! I hated phys ed.

Every single day. Gets the blood pumping to the brain to allow for maximum knowledge intake.

Maybe until a kid starts high school. There's MANY more classes I would rather take.

NO NO NO THEY SHOULDN'T have to. damn, ahh i'm so strongly against high school kids having required P.E.(even though they don't). I had to write an essay about what I thought about it. Damn people who think every high school kid can take P.E. everyday. Also, I'm not fat or out of shape, I could do p.e. everyday but thats not the reason I think it shouldnt be necessary..

The Surgeon General recomends *atleast* 30 minutes of daily exercise to maintain weight and stay healthy, I think all schools K-12 should have mandatory phsyical fitness for all students, every single day.

I agree sometimes gym class is worthless, when I took it all we ever did was play basketball, I dind't know how to play, I sat out, f*cking pointless. But having true fintess classes, how could anyone be against that?

I'm surprised anyone would be against this! Why couldn't you take it every day in high school? We had different fitness classes and I worked out every day in them. And was in awesome shape!

In my old highschool it was required as a credit, but I got my way out of it, and still got the credit. I hated the thought of p.e. ...I can get the exercise that I need on my own. So yea, that class could kiss my butt.

Absolutely not. Let the kids grow up and get fat.

Also, as a genius I was bullied in PE because I was so smart.

I don't think so.
At least, not on the high school level.

PE is a waste of time on the high school level, and my school thankfully understands that and only required one year of it.

Why would I want to be throwing balls back and forth and running up and down a field when I can be doing a useful class like Calculus, English, Spanish, etc.?

16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 4/22/06 - 3:30:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
At my school PE was mandatory up until grade 10. I think if schools actually had a decent fitness program it would be fine to have it be mandatory, but as it is it's pretty useless.

But I do think kids in elementary school should get more PE, at least a couple times a week. Most kids in elementary school love PE, have a lot of fun, as well as get into better shape and once a week isn't enough.

I don't see anything wrong with schools having P.E classes everyday. Yeah. You have to be mindful of getting the most out of your academics, but at the same time you must also realize that your personal health is just as important.

A main reason for me being against it is just thinking about the fat and lazy kids who won't want to take it in the first place, and working out for an hour each day when most work will be avoided won't really make a difference. Basicly schools shouldn't be trying to make us fit. We can do that on our own time. We can't, however learn all the ciriculum on our own. Which is my next reason; if one of our courses is required to be gym, there is less available courses for us to choose for what WE want to learn. Also, I attend a catholic school(ugh) so religion is already a required calss from grade 9-12. if you add p.e to the list of pointless courses we can't avoid, we(high school students) will have even less independency to lea

It's not mandatory anymore? When did this happen? It was mandatory when I was in school.

After Grade 9 you don't need to do it anymore. at least where I live

I see. I graduated ten years ago, so I wasn't aware of any change.

I have PE three times a week at my school, but there are clubs on every day, i think, that you can go to if you want. There are also sports teams/practices and then, if you really want more, you can take PE as a subject in year 10. Not all of it is physical, but still. If someone still isn't satisfied, then they can go to the gym, what do I care?
16 yrs ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 5:14:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
In middle school it was either band or gym, but in High School, a semester is required in order to graduate. That was a semester of pure hell. I had to go every day, and the class was the first one in the morning.

I don't think it should be mandatory, what should the school care if you don't feel like taking care of yourself?

I would think 2-3 times a week would be sufficient...

Strange, I was going to say just that, word for word, but fortunately I noticed that it would look weird below an identical post

Not mandatory... maybe 3-4 should be mandatory. However, having switched from a school that only gave us phys ed 2-3 times a week, I LOVE my new school for having it daily. It has really made a significant difference.
