Testosterone-fueled boys created most prehistoric cave art, according to a recently published book by one of the world's leading authorities on cave art. The theory contradicts the idea that adult, tribal shaman spiritual leaders and healers produced virtually all cave art. It also explains why many of the images drawn in caves during the Pleistocene, between 10,000 and 35,000 years ago, somewhat mirror today's artwork and graffiti that are produced by adolescent males.

'Today, boys draw the testosterone subjects of a hot automobile, fighter jet, Jedi armor, sports, direct missile hit, etc.— all of the things they associate with the Adrenalin of success,' said R. Dale Guthrie, author of The Nature of Paleolithic Art. 'I think the full larder (of) success of the excitement and danger of killing a giant bison or auroch in the Pleistocene was the equivalent of the testosterone art today.'

Do you think most cave art was just graffiti done by teenage boys?

Hahahaha, maybe!

It makes sense in a funny sort of way. Considering the human life span was probably 25-30 years back then, a 'teenage' boy would have been in his prime. He'd have been the hunter and the hero, hence it makes sense he'd be the one bragging about his kills.

I've never seen any graffiti of cars or Jedi armour... It's usually just squiggles...

I remember being taught that these cave drawings were made because people believed that drawings like these allowed them to wield control over the animals and help them kill them, sorta like magic.

Could be!
15 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/20/06 - 3:18:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think there is an easy way to prove it, but it sure would be interesting if that were the case.

Bwahahaha, I wonder if they also wore their loin clothes way down low like todays teens do with their jeans.

^Easy access for the confused caveman.

I saw an entire TV program about it. It claimed that they were painting things that they saw during hallucinations that were triggered by spending extended periods in the pitch black caves. Part of their argument was that they painted animals that were not hunted for food, and there were also many cave paintings found depicting geometric designs.
15 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 8/4/06 - 7:16:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
It seems to me that the paintings were much do deep in some of the caves that no one would crawl in there just to draw graffiti, cuz no one else would see it anyway.

No. I don't think so.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 9/12/06 - 11:09:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
I read that a while ago, it's pretty interesting and entirely plausable.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/4/06 - 6:16:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think there's a vital ingredient missing here...evidence. Without that it's just speculation.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/4/06 - 6:42:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, because we don't really know whether it was meant as vandalism or art. It could be either. And as all the cave-artists being teenage boys? Well, what else do you really expect--people lived much shorter lives back then, and if the rest of history is any indication, all the women probably did was crap out babies so it's unlikely they'd have done any cave art.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 11/13/06 - 8:34:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
I can see some caveboys getting ready to do a macho hunting gig while high on some new drug trying to do some sympathetic magic to make their lives easier.

I always thought it would be kids. Maybe bored, artistic housewives even. I can't imagine some spiritual leader wasting his time drawing pictures of buffalo.
15 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 1/11/07 - 8:55:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
Makes sense, but it can't be proved.

Well, that's probably not true for a start, as it's generally accepted that women did most of the work in 'prehistoric' times (like gathering food), while men went in hunts every so often, but rarely caught anything (hence, people seldom ate meat). But as you probably said that thing about crapping out babies just to invoke a response., i'd just like to enquire what 'if the rest of history is any indication' means. What history, per say?

boys don't draw that stuff around here, it's all just names and ______ is a promiscuous trollop etc
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Thursday 6/14/07 - 12:58:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
I see "Jedi Armour" painted all over the streets. Those gangs of testosterone-fuelled youngsters, dressed as Obiwan sitting in caves these days are absurd!
14 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Thursday 6/14/07 - 1:01:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
Im sure that they can some how come up with a way to carbondate a sample to determine it's origin.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/26/07 - 7:27:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Um, yeah. All the older people were out hunting or gathering.

DUHHH!!!

14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/26/07 - 7:31:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, I prefer the theory about the shamans, about the power of images, the magical symbolism and such and such. True or not, it appeals to me much more.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/26/07 - 7:38:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
I guess it could be but I don't think so.
