In a way this relates to vaccination, All disease vaccines expose you to a small amount of the virus which in turn helps build up an immunity to it.
Yes if I had children I'd definately get them vaccinated. Other diseases however would greatly depend on exactly WHAT diesease it was.

What kind of risk of death are we talking about? 10%? 5%? .001%? As a parent you HAVE to know that first so I guess no answer for me. Sorry.

Apparently if you haven't received chicken pox after you're a child it can be pretty brutal. So, I'd say as a child... Unless it was AIDS, or something.
14 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 7/7/07 - 10:49:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
This depends totally on the degree of certainty that the kid would ever get the disease naturally.
14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 9/4/07 - 12:56:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
Childhood illnesses are generally mild in children and harsh in adults. It's why they're called childhood illnesses. Great thing is usually when you get them you never catch them again. I would probably want my son to be exposed to chicken pox sooner rather than later. Colds or flus or other illnesses that we don't form permanent immunities to I would tend to avoid, and anything particularly dangerous or harmful I would avoid as well.

I've heard my Nana talking about chicken pox parties when she was a kid. If a family member came down with chicken pox all the other kids in the family would visit, and friends too, so that they could catch it as kids and not have to worry when they got older.
