Of course it would. The headquaters is in New York, many of the peacekeepers are from America, and besides, the world would be helpless without the US. Face it, the world economy would nearly collapse without the mutually understood worth of the dollar. We created the UN didn't we? Or at least it was our original idea. (Woodrow Wilson's League of Nations was a precusor to the UN) Besides the vote of the Security Council would be thrown off without one of its members.

Well it would certainly be a lot less effective without the richest and most powerful nation in the world being a member.

That's pretty obvious.

What he said.

Not helpless, but obviously it would make an effect.

The organisation would adapt to the change and continue to function.

yes and america didnt join it.
the us is in the un so the un can get funding and equipment. the price the un pays is the us dominates the un, but that means that the us also supplies fodder aswell.

^^ Oh don't try to fool us, the UN is just a forum for lesser countries to crtiticize the west, especially America, and we graciously allow it to continue although we could end it at any time. The UN has disproportianate equality.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 4/13/06 - 7:31:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's worthless anyway.
16 yrs ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 11:07:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
more helpless and worthless than it is. if that's possible.
16 yrs ago - Monday 5/8/06 - 11:10:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
And how worthless would the United States be if the UN imposed sanctions on us, is countries like China, India, and the Middle East refused to sell or trade with us because of our non-compliance?

As long as the UN wields economic collateral, it's plenty powerful.

yes we are definetly the most powerful nation in it
15 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 6/29/06 - 8:04:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes i would think so.
well they wouldn't be that strong.

First, that could only happen with US permission anyway - which is hardly likely. Even ignoring that, how exactly do you think India and China would be persuaded to cut off one of their largest trading partners, thus obliterating their economies overnight?

Why are so many people saying that they would roll over and die? They would be weakened, but not helpless. it wouldn't be like this

*Afghanistan*
"Ooh, all these peacekeepers really make me calm"
"Wait, today there are 15% less!"
"IM TICKED! LETS KILL EVERYONE!"
(battle cries)

Besides, the US and the UN really don't talk to eachother anymore. Case in point - war in iraq

G.W. "i wish the permission to invade iraq"
everyone in the U.N. "NO!!!!"
G.W. "I'll take that as a yes"

Response to the first post about the dollar.

The pound long before the dollar was an international standard. And it still is. Besides, canadian money isn't far off from american money. So no, trading networks wouldn't collapse if a major currancy wasn't there. Almost all of them would have to go down for trade networks to go down.

And they don't get one vote. Ooh! right now the US doesn't even care how everyone else votes. Im disturbed that they haven't been kicked out of the UN.

15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Monday 8/28/06 - 6:59:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
It is helpless & useless anyway. Look how long it has been in existence (1st, as the League of Nations) & look at how many wars there are STILL!! The UN will NEVER be able to bring peace to the earth. THAT task is reserved for A DIFFERENT kind of govt.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Monday 9/18/06 - 7:20:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yea, we pretty much started it.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 11/10/06 - 10:16:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
it's worthless with us...what the hell difference does it make?

The UN is already ineffective. Look at how they're handling Noth Korea.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 11/24/06 - 10:19:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe.
15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/9/06 - 12:26:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
As Peter Parker's uncle Ben and Bill Gates said, "With great power comes great responsibility." The US has the ability to be a country of great positive or great negative influence on the international community. Are they doing their duty to their fellow man?
15 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 4/14/07 - 9:35:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, considering the fact that the US does whatever it wants without taking into account what the UN thinks.

I'm not. If they kicked Countries out of the UN for not abiding by the wishes of the UN, there wouldn't be a UN anymore.

Yo

You can't go kicking major supporters out of your group after years with a top notch track record, just because they don't agree with the originations current agenda. The UN is about cooperation, not ultimatums.
