Any trait is a mixture between innate potential and whether or not you actually strive to reach that potential.

I think it is something you can gain (or lose) at any point in your life.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 2/16/06 - 6:14:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, in fact I think the more you get to know yourself, the more your confidence will grow.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 6:04:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
Some people are born with it, others need to gain it, like me! I hate doing little things like ringing companies, but I'm getting much better.

Yes I think it can be learnt, though not necessarily taught. It can be found in many ways, but I believe that if you fake confidence you become confident.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 8:06:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think it can be nurtured out of someone.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 8:32:41 AM EST (GMT-5)
It can be gained.

Oh good. Another nature/nurture question.

With the same answer as always... a bit of each!

I used to have no confidence but then I became best friends with a confident, loud, daring person and she rubbed off on me
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 7:38:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
u cant learn it
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 11:15:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's definitely innate..
But sometimes just clouded.
15 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Saturday 2/18/06 - 11:34:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
People can definitely gain confidence...just not as fast as they can lose it.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 3/2/06 - 8:06:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
You can gain confidence as you gain skill and/or experience
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 3/2/06 - 8:40:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Probably a little bit of both. You might be born with a certain amount, but anything could happen that could make you gain some or lose some.

You're pretty free with that word - why so certain?

^Because confidence is a personality trait, it can't be learnt, just unlocked. "Learned" meaning it wasn't there in the first place.

^^I agree with the "unlocked" theory.

That is just question begging: you assume as a premise the very thing your argument is meant to show.

That is way hard. What does this statement mean?
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 3/6/06 - 11:04:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
The bit after the colon is the definition.

I challenged you to explain why you are so certain that confidence is innate (ie, not learned) and you responded by saying that because it is a personality trait it must always have been present, as personality traits cannot arise from nothing (ie, cannot be learned). Thus, your claim that confidence cannot be learned is supported by the assumption that confidence cannot be learned, which is question-begging.

Do you have independent reasons for thinking confidence is innate?

15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 3/6/06 - 11:12:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Can personality traits be learnt?

I don't have other reasons, not at this time anyway.

15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 3/7/06 - 4:19:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
It is absolutely a learned trait. I believe we are born with natural (or innate) personality pre dispositions (ie to be more aggressive, shy, confident, extroverted, interested in X over Y), but that how those pre dispositions manifest and utlimately define our personality is completely dependent on how they were nurtured and our enviroment.

For example, take a person who has a naturally aggressive or competitive pre disposition. In an environment where people show that person how to channel that aggression it could easily turn into an interest in sports or debating. Under different circumstances it could just as easily turn into violence, anger management issues, bullying etc etc.

To say that ANY personality trait is just there or it isn't basically says that our environments don't have any affect on us, which is just absurd to me.

I see no reason to think personality traits are innate or that they cannot be learned. In any case, the relevant research implies that, like most things, they are heavily influenced by environment and are ultimately a consequence of an interaction between genes and environment.

I know what you meant. i just interpreted the question differently. Saying personlity traits are innate does not necessarily mean environments do not have an effect on them.
I took "Learned" as something that wasn't there before.
However, confidence is definitely innate.. there can't be anyone with 0 confidence levels.. there defintely has to be some, however small it may be.
A baby for instance, might be very confident, but as it grows older, it's confidence level might decrease..
So confidence is like a scale.. it both increases and decreases due to environmental circumstances, or self-concepts. But it certainly can't be learnt because it is already part of the make-up.
