Scientific immortality because of someone's achievements (they already exist) or science making physical immortality possible (which will only be a matter of time)?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 8:22:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
I really don't know.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 8:57:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't really see the point, but some people are so afraid of death that I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to "live forever," so I don't doubt it will happen eventually.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 11:06:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think that's kind of the ultimate goal of medical science
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 11:14:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
No there's a point to which curing illness can go. The body would just degrade and the any perceivable ways of continuing life forever include vast amounts of life support at which point you ask are they really alive?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 11:16:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
I only want to live until I've done everything. Don't want to miss a thing...

Science making physical immortality possible

16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 11:37:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think so, and I would hate to live forever.

That's just the point with physical immortality. It's not about being able to cure every known disease. It's about stopping the aging process.

I have no doubt it's possible. The trick is to control the process.

16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/14/06 - 2:15:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
maybe people will be able to live forever as far as the aging process, but the overpopulation would result in chaos and wars causing people to be killed anyways.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/14/06 - 2:46:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm sure people wouldn't want to in reality. plus the effects of over population and such would probably make the world a crappy place.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/14/06 - 3:12:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, but will that stop scientists?
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/14/06 - 8:32:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would never want to live forever.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Sunday 2/19/06 - 1:28:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
"I plan to live forever....so far, so good"
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/21/06 - 5:51:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think that it will be possible eventually.

Just not in my lifetime

When people consider immortality, they forget about how human existence will have changed alongside that particular scientific development.

It is a little like asking "Will they integrate virtual reality entertainment systems into Boeing 747s in the future?" Well, yes, they could, but nobody will be travelling by Boeing 747 anymore.

So when we consider the impact of human immortality, we shouldn't consider overpopulation or depletion of resources on Earth because far future technology will make it entirely feasible to colonise other planets and thus spread the human race further into the Universe.

However, it is difficult to know whether we will survive long enough as a race to reach that point. Sentient machines will have taken over.

I'm already stocking up on tins of beans just in case.

Oh and all of this answer assumes the Universe is infinite anyway. If we can't figure out a way to stop it from collapsing in a few trillion years, we're doomed.

NOPE, NEVER, GOD HELP US ALL, WHERE DO YOU PEOPLE GET THESE IDEAS!? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE AND WRONG TO BECOME IMMORTAL! EVIL PEOPLE COULD DO THAT AND GUESS WHAT?! THEY WOULDN'T DIE EVER! SO JUST STOP COMING UP WITH TERRIBLE AND OBVIOUSLY RIDICULOUS QUESTIONS, FOR MY SAKE!
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/5/06 - 11:50:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
O YA, GOD DECIDES WHEN YOU DIE AND YOUR TIME ON EARTH IS JUST TO SEE IF YOU DESERVE HEAVEN

That would be me. I realize that it's stupid, but I cannot get past my fear of death. It terrifies me to the point I can't sleep at night. So, I'd be all for this out of fear. But not out of a realistic expectation that humans should live forever. Because I really don't believe we should.

I just hope it's an alter...

They sure are tryin. But, as soon as they find one cure another epic comes out. So, I very much doubt it. Besides, our bodies naturlly start breaking down for death. How would you stop your cells from doing that?
16 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 7/23/06 - 5:08:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
yes i think they will but im not sure that i would want to achieve immortality
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 8/19/06 - 6:00:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
