There are worse things you can do for money than stay off drugs. 'And I've done them, too,' chuckled Allen Price, a 43-year-old methamphetamine addict from Oakland, Calif.

So when a friend told him about a 12-week program in San Francisco that would pay him up to $40 per week just to stay clean, he decided it was just what he needed. For five weeks since, he has trekked to a clinic several times a week to submit a urine sample, and pick up a few dollars for testing negative.

No, you can probably make more selling drugs.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 2/8/06 - 12:32:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well, I'm not sure about this. It's sounds good for the short term, but what will happen to these people when they're not getting paid anymore? Also, there's an element of swapping one addiction for another here that bothers me.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 2/8/06 - 1:12:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't care to pay people money to stay off something that was bad for them.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 4:18:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
It won't work.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 4:18:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
It would never work. Most would use the money to get more drugs.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 4:19:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sure, let them save up the $$$ and after the 12 weeks are up, they can go right back to meth with a nice bankroll!!!
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 2/13/06 - 4:35:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
No I don't think so.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 2/24/06 - 7:21:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wonder how they would make sure the people were truely addicted before they started the program...it would be interesting for a non-addict to claim to be trying to stop and sign up and just take free money.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 2/24/06 - 7:28:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
As long as the government isn't using my taxes to do it, I'm fine with it.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 2/24/06 - 11:50:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
thats horrible if you'd pay someone to stop doing things like that. they'd probably just buy more with the money later on anyways.
16 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 4/27/06 - 8:40:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh hell no. That's just stupid. And it wouldn't work. Just let the druggies OD and die. If they want to do drugs, then it should be illegal to treat them for any illness. That'll learn 'em.
16 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 6/30/06 - 8:01:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
maybe if i go on drugs i can get money just for quitting.....
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 8/4/06 - 4:28:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
i wouldn't say its a good idea..but its not a horrible one either

it would give some people more motivation to quit when they are already debating it

but then again, if you didn't have enough money to get your fix...and you had to stop for a few weeks anyway wouldn't that just be a way to get more money for your addiction?

I love it when there is a question about addicts and there is a picture of a pot leaf. MARIJUANA IS NOT ADDICTIVE. Just figured i'd let you all know. Maybe we should pay ciggaret smokers to stop spreading there cancer around at least cigs are addictive
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 8/29/06 - 4:09:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
this is how this would work for me let me take that money go to walmart buy some detox and a blunt and chill wit my homies in truth no this is a horrible drating idea
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 8/29/06 - 4:13:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. Let them use their drugs. If they have to be paided to get off them, then they don't need to get off them in the first place.
15 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 10/4/06 - 5:58:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
No.. They could just save their money and buy it when they're not being tested anymore.. Besides, drug tests can be cheated...

I'm sure paying addicts to stay clean will not work. Wouldn't they just take the money and use it to buy more drugs?
15 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 5/28/07 - 1:40:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
1. Many people would just turn addict to make some extra money
2. Exactly what we needed: a payment for stupid people! XD
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 6/3/07 - 7:07:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
they should have that program all over the world
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 6/3/07 - 7:19:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
Why should we be paying them to do what they should already be doing themselves, when there are countless other problems that need the money much more than some drug addicts looking to make some cash. If they want to use drugs so badly, let them use them.
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/28/07 - 6:12:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd fake an addiction ;)
