The liars and cheapskates would definitely overpower the honest people. Think about how many people there are now who try to evade the tax system while it's the law, nevermind if it was optional.

More in debt, less people would be paying money to the government.

I mean the government would be more in debt, not the people.

I think it would help the government in not spending so much money on things like payraises for themselves and they would have to use it more wisely than they do now.

In the Articles of Confederation, which was the U. S. government before the current one, the national government did not have the power to tax, it could only ask the states for money. (which they did not have to give) The National government then couldnt give any money becuase none of the states wanted to give it up. It was a large part of the reason that government failed. So I would have to say that we would have more of a deficit.

More, because who would willingly want to give money to the government?

Nobody would pay them if they were optional. But they'd still get all pissy about not having roads to drive on or cops to bust the criminals...

Probably about the same: the government would be forced to live within its income plus the amount it's able to borrow, whatever that income might be. Of course, spending would have to be much lower as a result, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but that's another question .

What I'd like to see is a section on the tax form that lets me decide what the money I send will be used for. Let the Hawks fund the war, I'll fund the parks system and Medicare.

More of a deficit, obviously. If taxes were optional, no one would pay them.

you mean if the fairtax was implemented? we'd have less debt. I would gladly pay all the taxes I do now (and I think taxes are evil) if I could pick where they went.
