I can't speak to performance but they sure look like night and day.

with no written info to compare... I'd say that the new one is shinier.

I think the new designer should be shot. Its trying to hard to keep the cut edges of the classic BMW but add a futuristic slice to the new. The new Series 5 is case in point. The only upgrade that makes sense is the new M3 engine that works on a an almost w/rotary basis. Having said that I do like the new cabriolet and the Z5 has smart styling.

I'm impressed by some of the engineering, and the interior plastics are better than on the 1-series (its a lot worse than my Renault), but the styling is poor - rear end looks like a previous-generation Nissan, front end just doesn't work somehow. Then again, I never liked either the E36 or E46 when they were new. I guess I'll get used to it, after all its regularly in the Top10 best-sellers list here (UK).

The one on the left looks nicer to me, but it could just be the more flattering background color who knows. I know jacksh*t about cars.

I think that that the new interiors of the 3 and 5 series seem shoddy compared to previous line models. BMW have never been Rolls Royce but they definitely had prestige..now they're driven by chavs because of loosing their edge and the carriagework is showing signs of skoda's bad years. They need to get back to basics.
