Yes. Some parents treat TV like an electronic nanny, and aren't very selective about what their children watch.

If they watch a lot of it and the same programs consistently, then if definitely can. Most children are very impressionable (I speak from experience) and will imitate or believe most things they see and hear. If they see and hear things on TV, they repeat what they've seen. If you don't believe me, you can ask my cousin who got reprimanded by his mother for immediately repeated a phrase from TV containing profanity.

In short, parents better make sure their kids are seeing and hearing positive images. It might be a good idea to ban certain programming or maybe just put the TV in the closet somewhere.

What children are watching certainly does have an effect on them, though, especially if they're not mature for their age.

Remember a few years back when WAY too many twelve- and thirteen-year-old boys started jumping off houses or trying to set someone on fire after watching an episode of Jackass?

Of course, you can't blame what kids watch ENTIRELY, because people are still free to make their own choices.
It still has an effect, though.
Ultimately, it's up to parents to regulate what their kids do.

Yep.

When I was little, I always watched Power Rangers. It turned me into the biggest tomboy in the history of forever. Until I reached the second grade, of course- the year I got female friends.

When I babysit kids who have unlimited TV access and limited to none, there is a huge difference in personality and behavior.

no but bad parenting can.

Yes. Invariably for the better. My friends when I was a kid who had seen more 18 rated movies on TV and sex and stuff were always cooler.
