I dont think so. I know how to drive one, and I think its like riding a bike, but you can go through your whole life without needing to know how, so I definitely dont think so. I had to do a hill stop when I got my license, and ten years later I still have never used that either.

I agree, mainly because most CDL sticks are unsynchro'd. Nothing like driving a regular stick.

Though floating the tranny is pretty easy, once you get the hang of it.

No, it probably isn't a necessity these days, but I think people who can't drive a manual car are pretty pathetic.

Its not a bad idea. I think everyone should be able to drive a stick. I haven't quite mastered a stick but I have gotten to the point where I could drive one in an emergency. I like my automatic, but it gets boring sometimes.

No because you can always drive a manual instead.
Stick is bad anyways.

uh...no women would have driver's licenses if this were a requirement. lol

NOpe. You pass your license, and then you practice on a standard transmission.

In the UK, you can take your test on either - but if you pass the test on an automatic, you are only entitled to drive automatics; to drive a manual, you have to take it on a manual instead, which covers you for either.

That's illegal here. Driving a standard transmission can be dangerous if you're not taught properly.

oh. Not here. As long as you have a license here, type 5, you can drive any vehicles with less than 7 passengers (except motorcycle)

No, that really does not seen necessary.

Kaneda's right; in addition, in the UK, there are two levels of license: one if you took the test on an automatic, which only entitles you to drive an automatic - the other if you took the test on a manual transmission, which entitles you to drive either.

This is the only way I'd be in favor of it. Considering you CAN drive just automatics if you choose, then this makes the most sense.

I actually think this might be a good idea - but I can't drive a stick.

Personally I think owning a stick should be mandatory. Like it was said earlier I've noticed people who can drive a stick tend to be a little more attentive drivers. Plus they get better gas mileage. And on top of it they'd be safer cause it's too difficult to put on make-up while talking on the cell phone while reading the paper while you are driving in a manual.

BAN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS!!!

No. When I was learning to drive, all I had available to me was automatic.
16 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/14/06 - 1:19:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
Here it goes like this:
-If you pass the driving exam with a car that has automatic transmission, you will be allowed to drive automatics but not manuals.

-If you pass the exam with a car that has a stick (which most people do), you can drive both types.

I think that's a good system because most cars here still have a stick.

No, but a seperate lisence for sticks wouldn't be a bad idea.
