A pregnant 13-year-old girl in Florida has been told she cannot have an abortion because she lacks the maturity to make such a decision. A state court granted an injunction which prevents the girl from terminating her pregnancy. She is three months pregnant and had planned to have an abortion on Tuesday of this week.

The American Civil Liberties Union says it will launch an urgent appeal against the ruling. Florida's department of children and families intervened and took the matter to court, arguing the teenager, who is under the care of the state, is too young and immature to make an informed medical decision. Judge Ronald Alvarez in Palm Beach accepted that argument and has granted a temporary injunction and psychological evaluation, which effectively blocks her from terminating the pregnancy.

Do you believe this 13-year-old girl is too young to choose whether or not to have an abortion?

Well, the legal case is very clear cut. There is not parental consent law, so they can't really prevent her from getting an abortion.

Florida girl's abortion allowed

"...the same judge reversed the order late on Monday, after LG underwent a psychological evaluation."

"Florida's Department of Children and Families had sought to block the abortion, because LG is a ward of the state."

"Florida state law specifically does not require a minor to seek parental consent before an abortion.

LG's lawyers argued that meant the state - as her legal guardian - could not block it. "

I think that she probably is old enough to make such a decision, though of course it depends on the maturity of the individual, though I wouldn't want anyone's reproductive rights taken away because someone thought they weren't "mature" enough to

17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 1:26:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
If she has the maturity to make a decision, however stupid it was, to have unprotected sex, then she's mature enough to choose to get rid of the baby.
17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 2:30:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think so. I think every body should have the choice, even if they are 7. (and it is possible to get pregnate then. there was this 5 yr old girl in central america who did)
17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 2:40:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think anybody should be killing their own babies.
17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 2:45:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
"I don't think anybody should be killing their own babies."

That's not the question. The question was whether or not she was old enough to make that decision.

17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 3:09:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
She seems to be old enough to get pregnant, so she is old enough to decide.
17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 3:16:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree, if you're stupid enough to get pregnant at such young age, you should at least have the right to regret it. (You get the point, I'm not too good at formulating)
17 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/4/05 - 3:24:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
She's certainly too young to raise a child. So of course she could abort.

she got herself into the situation so they should let her deal with it the way she thinks is best
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 11:19:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
Nobody has the right to choose to murder their baby. It' SICK.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 9:57:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm wondering if maybe she was molested - since she is so young.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 9:59:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
I disagree with abortion in molestation cases because then the abuser can "get rid of" it and make the "problem" disappear with no repercussions.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 10:24:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
She is much, *much* too young to make such a decision, and she was also *much* too young to even be having sex.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 11:34:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
What was she doing having sex at 13 in the first place?
No, I don't think she would have the mental capabilities to make such a decision.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/5/05 - 11:41:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
Her body has not yet matured.

It is unhealthy for her to bear a child at such a young age. An abortion is appropriate.

17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 12:02:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
Her body is not mature enough for her to carry a baby for nine months. Think of all the mental and physical stress a 13 year old would have carrying a baby.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 9:36:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well that's what happens when you have sex. Even someone as young as 13 knows that.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 3:48:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Absolutely not. Not only do I think she has every right to choose whether she wants to have a baby, I also think she has both the right and the responsibility to face the consequences of her actions.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 3:49:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, she got herself pregnant, she should be allowed to get herself unpregnant.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 3:55:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, she chose to have sex, she can choose to get an abortion.
I don't agree with what she did, but I don't think she could physically or mentally care for a baby at that age, so if an abortion is what she wants, I think it's appropriate.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 4:00:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes, she should choose... noone has the right to tell you if you have the right to have an abortion or not
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 4:06:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
if she chose to have sex she has every to choose what to do with the baby ...its her body this shouldnt even b a issue ..
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 4:11:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I guess she can choose whether she wants to have an abortion. I hope she has enough sense not to get pregnant again for a really long time.
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/6/05 - 4:26:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well, first of all a 13 year old having sex is just scary and gross all at the same time. I dont know if they are too young to decide to get an abortion. They certainly are too young for sex yet they did that anyways....
