Not force, but let them try if they show an intrest. I wish my parents had forced me to take piano lessons, I would love to play the piano.

It turns out either good or bad if you force your kids to do something like that. I have many friends who were "forced" to learn an instrument when they were young, but they love it now. But some people avoid music because they were forced to take lessons or whatever, and it was a bad experience for them. I guess it depends on how much you respect your parents and how reasonable they come across getting you to learn an instrument.

I was forced to take piano lessons as a small child. This led me to hate the piano and quit whenever I became old enough to say I no longer wanted to without fearing the consequences. I still hate the piano. Don't force your children to do something they seriously dislike.

no, you shouldnt force your child to do anything. If you feel the need for a goal to be achieved, do it yourself

Why does everyone assume piano lessons are so unpleasant?

I think pianos are one of the more boring instruments. I mean, EVERYONE plays them!! I played clarinet, but I hated that too. I just wanted some extra-curricular activities.

I hate playing instruments for some reason. I was forced to play the organ, which I quit. Then I was again forced to take on piano, which I again quit. So, no, definitely no forcing.

My parents forced me to learn the piano, and I hated it...but now I like it. Herdakirin, the piano is one of the hardest instruments to play. Appreciate it?!

I had lessons when I was about 8, but I gave up after a while. Now I wish my parents had made me keep it up, because when I do feel like playing (I can still play to a fair degree), I'm annoyed that I can't do anything more than relatively easy pieces.

It would be great if children could make decisions for themselves as to what's best for them, but they aren't capable of choosing well in many cases. Learning any musical instrument is a way to implement discipline.

No but I do think that you should encourage your children to stick with the hobbies that they already enjoy.

No, it'd make them hate what they could learn to love on their own.

I wouldn't force them to start taking lessons, but I would 'strongly encourage' them not to quit when they start grumbling about how difficult it turned out to be. If they felt strongly about wanting to quit after they reached a certain level, I would be OK with that.

No, I wouldn't force them to play. I don't think that would accomplish anything.

Nah, it's fun but it shouldn't be forced. I think at some point kids get interested in learning how to make music. I banged on pots for hours on end, and the piano fit right in.

"I would never force my kids to do anything." Good luck with that--I bet your opinion will change when you are up until 3am every night instead of forcing them to go to bed...
