My parents did this to me, and it sucked. I think parents should find an instrument the kid wants to play and get him lessions for that.

No, they should only play if they express interest in it.

No, of course not. You should let the child make the choice as to whether or not they want to pursue any type of activity like that.

I don't see anything wrong with it.. Piano and ballet or sports are great for kids. Hell, they don't know what's good for them.

I think piano's a good basis for later musical endeavours. If I ever had children, I'd fill their lives with things. I was forced to learn piano for six years, altogether, and I hated it. At the time, i was like "please can I quit?" but I'm now very glad my parents made me do it. It's good to have a basic knowledge of those things.

I'm a piano teacher and I want to teach only those who are interested. The ones who are forced quit sooner or later.

I think it's a good idea to expand their music knowledge.

For a few months, at least, yes. Music lessons can be a basis for all kinds of artistic endeavors. I was forced, and totally hated it, but now i play keyboard, guitar, bass, and work in a recording studio. Basically, music is my life, and I feel like i have the appreciation and theory basis to make that work.

Yes, I shall teach all my children piano and if they don't enjoy it I'll force feed them brocoli. *evil cackle*

If my child showed an interest in music, I'd encourage them to take up *some* instrument, not force them to play piano.

they should get the chance to play an instument. When I was little i had my friend teach me what she learned in her piano lessons because my parents didn't want to have to pay for lessons for me.

My parents made me do cheerleading since i was 4 and i resented them. I wasnt ever sure if it was something I enjoyed, or something I just did because it was expected of me.

Kids should be encouraged to try musical and sporting pursuits but if after a while they hate it, they should be allowed to try something else. Too many kids have no hobbies these days except hanging out on street corners drinking cider.

My parents forced me, and I'm glad they did. I didn't like it much when I was younger but once I got good at it, I loved it.

Being forced won't make the child happy, but I suppose as a parent you have to make that decision as to what's best for your child. I think you should encourage your child to follow his or her heart and not force them to do anything they don't want to do. I know that I'd be resentful if my parents had forced me to play the piano or continue basketball. Instead, I found singing and reading on my own and am much happier as an end result.

No, but I always wanted to and my parents never let me. I think it should be taught only if they show interest...

if they wanted to, then i'd encourage them to stick at it, but i wouldn't force it on them. after all, kids are people too, they have the right to choose what they do ordont want to do.

No, I'd give them a choice. Piano or execution.
