Yeah...'Single with kids'? Single is single is single. Glad I could be of service?

Uh yeah...if you're single, you're single. That's about all there is to it...

I don't get the question, how is a person not single without a significant other?
17 yrs ago - Thursday 4/28/05 - 12:26:31 AM EST (GMT-5)
Um, single mother, single father, single parent with dependents. Any of these ring a bell?

"Single" doesn't mean absolutely alone. It means that they don't have a Significant Other, and are therefor "available". Having a kid may mean you have less time to date, but it doesn't mean you are unavailable.

Indeed

I think 'single' means you are completely on your own. If you have a kid, you are strapped for the rest of your life, so in a way it's almost like another relationship. They aren't exactly alone.

yes

I dunno, english is my second language and your first one Kiki, so maybe I shouldn't talk. But I've always understood it to mean "not romantically involved"

Uh yes, if you don't have a S/O you're single, kids or not.

But you aren't free. Maybe free would be a better word.

If I see a girl I like, and I'm wondering if I should ask her out or something, her having a kid seems less of a restriction than her having a boyfriend or husband. Far less.

yes.

Kiki, there is absolutely no point in arguing against an established definition of a word just because *you* think otherwise. It's like me arguing that a table with three legs isn't a table, because *I* don't think tables should have less than four legs. What you are saying has merit to it, but not in the context/

The point was to see if anyone else thought the way I did - some do, most don't. I still think you aren't single if you have kids, but that's me. 'Society' sees it differently. But 'society' also thinks you must have kids to be happy, so I don't take a lot of stock in what 'society' thinks

Single is a marital status - it's not like you're married to your kids.

Uh, ever heard of a single mother?
