17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 4/4/05 - 2:54:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. I'll only use large words when they are appropriate. I am not going to use them just to show off. That's stupid.

I don't do it on purpose - words tend to just come out from listening to my mother. She has a large vocabulary as she reads so much, so often. She'll read a book, and anytime she doesn't know a word she writes it down and makes it a task to learn the definition of that word.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 4/5/05 - 4:47:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
Porpoise, I didn't ask whether it's a matter of showing off. I asked because I, like Daydreaming's mom, read alot. Because of that, I tend to be more wordy than most people - and I use larger words.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/6/05 - 5:16:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't mean to, I just tend to if I am reading alot at the time. I hate it when I will say something and the person/group gives me "deer in headlights" look. It makes me feel like an ass.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/6/05 - 5:19:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
no - its just the way things go
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/6/05 - 5:39:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
Only if the time calls for it, which it rarely does in my life.
It irks me when people feel the need to say every sentence with at least one 'big' word. It seems they are trying to prove their self-worth by appearing smarter than the normal Joe down the street.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/6/05 - 6:49:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I make an effort of using as less big words as possible.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 4/7/05 - 10:46:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
Geeky, I seriously don't think that most people use large words to appear smarter or better than anyone.

I try to use large words if I remember them - just because it's better to not let those words go out of use.

17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 4/7/05 - 10:53:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
Undoubtedly.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 4/7/05 - 2:00:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Just the opposite. "Speak to your audience." If you can't be understood, there's not much point in talking at all. Now, it's a different matter if you know your conversational partner can understand ...
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 4/8/05 - 4:24:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm afraid I just do it automatically. I hope not.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 4/11/05 - 9:48:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
Twisebaker, you misunderstood my post. I do read a lot and I do have a large vocabulary, but I don't make an effort to use large words. They only come out naturally. I personally feel that when you use them in inappropriate situations that it sounds like you are showing off.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 4/11/05 - 11:36:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
Porpoise, I see what you're saying. *nods* Though I hope that most don't automatically take it as that. Like most people, I just do it naturally, too, and I hope that I'm not coming off as a show-off, ya know?
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 4/22/05 - 11:15:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
They just come out, like drool.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 5/2/05 - 5:21:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I try hard to convey my meaning as accurately as possible. Sometimes that means long words, sometimes short.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 5/2/05 - 5:33:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not particularly, but some people seem to think I do. I guess it's all relative.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 5/2/05 - 5:34:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
Nope. Unless I really need to.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 7/9/05 - 8:33:49 PM EST (GMT-5)

17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 7/11/05 - 2:32:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
sometime i try but only when i am talking to smart people...but it never really workd out for me
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 7/11/05 - 2:39:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
I do if I want someone to take my opinion seriously. It's really amazing how much athority people will give to your ideas if you sound smart. Also sometimes when I read certain authors I start talking like them. At least in my head.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Wednesday 7/13/05 - 1:00:57 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not in my daily vocabulary but I do in my writing.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/19/05 - 2:02:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes, all the time, my friends call me a walking dictionary
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/19/05 - 2:04:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
I get "the word of the day" in my email-and I try to use that word sometime throughout the day.
