CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Reuters) - A Harvard University student's fledgling dorm-cleaning business faced the threat of a campus boycott on Thursday after the school's daily newspaper slammed it for dividing students along economic lines.

The Harvard Crimson newspaper urged students to shun Dormaid, a business launched by Harvard sophomore Michael Kopko that cleans up for messy students. 'By creating yet another differential between the haves and have-nots on campus, Dormaid threatens our student unity,' the Crimson said in an editorial.

Do services like `Dormaid` that come to college dorms to clean for students willing to pay, only lead to a greater divide between the `haves` and `have-nots`?

I don't get what that means... 'haves' and have-nots'

People who have money, and people who don't ... I think it's ridiculous people would want to ban it for that reason! They need to learn that in the real world, some people will have more money than them and can afford more things. This isn't the USSR

I think by college age kids should learn to take care of themselves. That's kind of ridiculous.

And really I do wonder who would want to clean up after them.

Most dormrooms are the size of a shoebox.. Even the bigger ones aren't that big. And if you have the appartment stlye ones with bedrooms, bathrooms and a common room, then you usually live with a bunch of people. What I'm getting at is that the amount of space that one actually has to clean in a dorm room is rediculously small. If you are young and healthy and still so lazy that you can't take 10 minutes to pick up and vacuum your floor and another 10-15 minutes once a week to clean a bathroom, then you shouldn't be going to college; you should be sitting on a couch somewhere smoking crack, because that is the job that best fits your qualifications.

yeah, the "haves" hire the dormaids, and the "have-nots" work for them and earn money. after college, the "haves" have no domestic skills, no work ethic, and should they get cut off from daddy's pocket, no money. the "have-nots" have all of the above.

^Very good point. I agree with that.

why should they... if they have the money and they don't feel like cleaning, they can pay a service. I don't think that what they do is admirable, but they should be allowed to.

Of all the major things that perpetuate the divide between haves and have-nots, you choose a dorm room cleaning company?

The Crimson Chin! Oh... sorry.

If you ban Dormaid, then you should ban everything else that differentiates the "haves" and the "have-nots". Which would be everything.

I don't think it should be banned. Although rich students who brag about their maids should get a firm eye-rolling and no extra peer status. Just ignore this dumb fad, coeds...

A man quoted "Gilmore Girls".

Ha!

The same kids will probably grow up and hire people to clean their houses as well. It's a business that employs a lot of people. I've cleaned houses before. It's easy and decent money.
