Of course it wouldn't eliminate it, You_Wish, but it would certainly reduce it slightly. Economic hardship would be lessened as a motive, so crimes based on those would lessen drastically.

Well, in order to answer this properly one would have to study crime motivations and patterns and whatnot extensively. I'd guess crime would be reduced only slightly, like Malletman said, but there are so many different reasons people commit crimes, it would really be hard to say how much it would be reduced.

Yes, poverty makes people more willing to get money illegally. This could involve selling drugs, theft, gang activities, and sometimes paid murder. There will always be crime no matter what, but there would be less. The gap between the poor and the rich is huge by the way. 10% of the population owns 90% of the country.

I think it is a hypothesis worth trying. What negative effects could there be from narrowing the gap? (I'm not saying that there wouldn't be negatives, I just can't think of any.)
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/23/05 - 6:24:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Some types of crime yes and others no.

Depends heavily on the motives of such crimes.

"What negative effects could there be from narrowing the gap?"

Messing with the ideals of capitalism, mostly...

17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 8:41:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Poverty is the cause of all crime, so hell yeah.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 9:21:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
Im sorry, I don't think poverty is the cause of all crime.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 9:23:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it would reduce the crime associated with poverty, and it would remove some of the power from the hands of those who need money to comit their crimes. Of course.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 9:24:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
why would it..geesh
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 9:30:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
Wealthy people commit crimes too, look at our president for example.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 9:46:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not all wealthy people do..some people actually work very hard for their money and to get where they are today...yes, there is a bad egg in every bunch...
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:08:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not all poor people do either. My point is just that by narrowing the gap crime would only be reduced slightly, if at all. Especially if you consider that the shift would cause the previously wealthy to look for new ways to compensate for lost income.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:10:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
why should they have to look for new ways to compensate when they worked their asses off for their money in the first place
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:14:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
I take it you have enough food to eat every day? Because even though i consider that i work my ass off, some weeks I don't have enough food for two days of the week. I still have enough to feed my kids, of course.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:15:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because money doesn't grow on trees. If the gap was narrowed, that would mean that the poor would have more money. Where does this money come from? It comes from these people who "worked their asses off", the wealthy.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:15:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
yeah i have never gone without food..i am 21 yrs old with 2 degrees and 2 jobs and a 3 yr old son in my own house
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:17:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
Narrowing the gap would mean that you would have to work even harder to maintain wealth, or find other ways.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:19:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
"yeah i have never gone without food..i am 21 yrs old with 2 degrees and 2 jobs and a 3 yr old son in my own house"

I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make.

17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:20:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
Look, im not saying you don't work hard for your money. But i think that sometimes people who have enough believe people who don't just are lazy. I think it kind of takes away from all of the other factors involved.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/5/05 - 10:22:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
ok yeah lets take the wealthies money just to give it to the poor .... why dont they get another job and earn there own money
