McDonald's Corp. said it was considering whether to make its chicken suppliers use a new, more humane slaughter method following a proposal by one of its shareholders. The firm is carrying out a feasibility study into requiring suppliers to switch over to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK), a technique that a leading animal rights group with shares in McDonald's had championed.

With CAK, chickens are put in a controlled environment in which their oxygen is slowly replaced with argon or nitrogen, putting the birds to sleep quickly and painlessly, according to PETA.

Should controlled-atmosphere killing be implemented anywhere animals are slaughtered?

Anything to eliminate pain seems like a good idea. It'll probably produce better meat, too.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Wednesday 1/12/05 - 10:12:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, that is just dumb.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 1/13/05 - 7:47:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
Just don't slaughter the animals! That would solve the problem.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 1/26/05 - 7:29:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
who cares how they're killed????? everything serves a purpose in life, and their purpose is to die so people can eat. i'm all for being kind to animals and the environment, but gimme a break! Dying is dying, whether by getting your head cut off or suffocating or whatever other way is used. let's worry about more important issues than how to kill the food we eat.

So this stuff that is going to become food for human consumption will be "treated" with argon and or nitrogen? Me no scientist, but me no like sound of this.
Of greater concern to me than how they are killed is how they are raised. The chicken cage highrises where they defecate on the ones underneath them and have to be pumped full of drugs have got to go.

what does meat taste like without adrenalin?

Sure I'd rather have animals not being killed at all, but reason one for eating some meat is that it is built in in nature....which obliges us to hunt for it with something sportive like a spear. to breed hem in captivity and then kill them unsportlike is...ehm...unsportive.
And if we eat meat it's way nicer to not upset the animal and give it a swift or just relaxed death.

I wonder how painless it actually is. I would think that the feeling of impending suffocation would be rather unsettling as it gets harder and harder to breathe...
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 2/18/05 - 4:59:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
No cause for concern in that respect, Uncle: Both argon and nitrogen are totally inert gases. Remember; 70% of the air we breathe is nitrogen.

sounds like a good idea

I'm a vegetarian. I know this is a contridiction, but these animals were born to be killed. I don't see why these things should be so high up on the agenda. who cares about the way in which a few animals die, when we have hundreds of millions of people from LEDCs dying from simple, curable diseases?
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 5:45:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
^ Animals feel just as much pain as humans, you disgusting excuse for a human being! You only care about your own species? Well, aren't you all high and mighty, sicko?!
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 5:46:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
Some animals probably wouldn't think twice about killing humans--it seems only fair...
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 6:23:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because they don't have the developed brain for compassion.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 6:39:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
So why should we.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 9:20:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because we know better and we can understand pain.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 3/28/05 - 11:30:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, witchygurl, they're going to die. Does that mean that it's ok to torture them as they die?

If you're going to kill something to eat, at least kill it humanely.

It's the Vegetarian Brigade once again jumping up and down about meat eaters, only this time it's in the disguise of humane killing of the animals. Really, those animals are not human and cutting the heads off is pretty quick. We eat them, they are food, not pets or people. How is suffocating them any better than using a knife?
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 1:14:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Some people do have those types of animals as pets, and although these ones may night be raised to be pets, they still feel the same pain.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 1:35:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you chop their head off. They die instantly and are painless.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 5:13:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
^ How is it instant if chickens run around with their heads off?
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 5:17:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
If their head is chopped off, they can't feel pain anyway, so them running around for a bit is pretty irrelevant.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 5:19:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
You're not too up on the nervous system are you.

How can something feel pain without the necessary parts of the brain that process it? They don't. They're running around with their heads cut off because its a reflex.

17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 5:31:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
^ To be more precise, it's caused by adrenaline in the muscles causing them to convulse. They don't so much run as flop around.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 5:34:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
Thats the word I was looking for.

Go lack of scientific knowledge!

17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 3/29/05 - 6:05:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
In the current method of killing chickens, the chickens are clamped by their feet upside down from metal brackets, then a knife-like insturment theoretically cuts off their heads. They are then plunged into boiling water to loosen their feathers.

It is painful and frightening to the chickens to be hung upside down. If they are twisting around (very likely, since they are struggling and frightened), the knife may not cut off their head, and they are plunged alive into the boiling water.
