Anything to eliminate pain seems like a good idea. It'll probably produce better meat, too.

Just don't slaughter the animals! That would solve the problem.

who cares how they're killed????? everything serves a purpose in life, and their purpose is to die so people can eat. i'm all for being kind to animals and the environment, but gimme a break! Dying is dying, whether by getting your head cut off or suffocating or whatever other way is used. let's worry about more important issues than how to kill the food we eat.

So this stuff that is going to become food for human consumption will be "treated" with argon and or nitrogen? Me no scientist, but me no like sound of this. Of greater concern to me than how they are killed is how they are raised. The chicken cage highrises where they defecate on the ones underneath them and have to be pumped full of drugs have got to go.

what does meat taste like without adrenalin? Sure I'd rather have animals not being killed at all, but reason one for eating some meat is that it is built in in nature....which obliges us to hunt for it with something sportive like a spear. to breed hem in captivity and then kill them unsportlike is...ehm...unsportive. And if we eat meat it's way nicer to not upset the animal and give it a swift or just relaxed death.

I wonder how painless it actually is. I would think that the feeling of impending suffocation would be rather unsettling as it gets harder and harder to breathe...

No cause for concern in that respect, Uncle: Both argon and nitrogen are totally inert gases. Remember; 70% of the air we breathe is nitrogen.

I'm a vegetarian. I know this is a contridiction, but these animals were born to be killed. I don't see why these things should be so high up on the agenda. who cares about the way in which a few animals die, when we have hundreds of millions of people from LEDCs dying from simple, curable diseases?

^ Animals feel just as much pain as humans, you disgusting excuse for a human being! You only care about your own species? Well, aren't you all high and mighty, sicko?!

Some animals probably wouldn't think twice about killing humans--it seems only fair...

Yes, witchygurl, they're going to die. Does that mean that it's ok to torture them as they die? If you're going to kill something to eat, at least kill it humanely.

It's the Vegetarian Brigade once again jumping up and down about meat eaters, only this time it's in the disguise of humane killing of the animals. Really, those animals are not human and cutting the heads off is pretty quick. We eat them, they are food, not pets or people. How is suffocating them any better than using a knife?

Some people do have those types of animals as pets, and although these ones may night be raised to be pets, they still feel the same pain.

If you chop their head off. They die instantly and are painless.

^ How is it instant if chickens run around with their heads off?

If their head is chopped off, they can't feel pain anyway, so them running around for a bit is pretty irrelevant.

You're not too up on the nervous system are you. How can something feel pain without the necessary parts of the brain that process it? They don't. They're running around with their heads cut off because its a reflex.

^ To be more precise, it's caused by adrenaline in the muscles causing them to convulse. They don't so much run as flop around.

In the current method of killing chickens, the chickens are clamped by their feet upside down from metal brackets, then a knife-like insturment theoretically cuts off their heads. They are then plunged into boiling water to loosen their feathers. It is painful and frightening to the chickens to be hung upside down. If they are twisting around (very likely, since they are struggling and frightened), the knife may not cut off their head, and they are plunged alive into the boiling water.
