SEATTLE -- In nightlife, as in T-shirts, there is fallacy in the notion that one size fits all. Melissa Habeck, a vivacious plus-size woman from Seattle, found that some bars just didn't fit right. They weren't comfortable, and they didn't make her feel fabulous. So she did what any smart shopper would do -- she kept looking. Her Goldilocks moment came when she discovered Abundance Northwest. Sold.

For nearly a year, Abundance Northwest has been throwing what it calls size-positive club nights, where BBW (big beautiful women) and BHM (big handsome men) come together to mingle, drink and dance. Nearly everyone, regardless of size, has experienced a weekend when he or she feels too fat to go out. Abundance Northwest's goal is to quash this notion, and it appears to be working. At favorite locations, up to 100 people typically gather once or twice a month to dance under strobe lights to Nelly and Jay-Z. Some travel from as far as Portland and Vancouver, B.C., to attend...

Do you think these `size-positive` nightclubs are a good idea for those who feel too fat to dance at regular clubs?

No, they should learn to socialize.

I'd feel worse if someone suggested that I go to a club that caters to fatties.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 3:31:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
Leave it to Seattle to pull something like that. It's degrading.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 5:53:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
A nightclub for fat people. I agree about it being somewhat insulting/degrading--it seems to imply that they're too fat to go anywhere else.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 6:08:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
Do they have to leave their thin friends at the door?

Is there a sign, "You must be at least this fat to get in"?

17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 7:02:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
haha thats so stupid
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 7:17:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
On one hand it seems there is a serious lack of self esteem here. But on the other hand I don't see how this is any different to clubs holding Over 28 nights, Single Parent nights or the Desperate & Dateless Balls.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 9:17:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
I am betting most of you didn't read the article by your comments... first off, I doubt it's degrading if other fat people came up with the idea after being embarrassed at clubs full of normal people. And Jpdp, it clearly says in the article that anyone can get in, no matter what their weight is. It's no different than 'black' clubs or 'gay' clubs in my opinion.

I don't know if it's a good idea or not, probably not, because they shouldn't feel so bad about themselves in the first place that they hide away from the rest of the public. But at least I read the article before trying to decide

17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 11:29:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
i agree the first six posters did not read the article. it seems to me these people feel more comfortable in this environment. who are we to judge? they are having fun and not hurting or discriminating against anyone.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/15/04 - 11:33:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sure, why not? If the fatties want to have a night out with other fatties what's the problem?
Great business idea
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/21/04 - 9:10:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's just encouraging people that it's okay to be obese. Clubs should be about motivation to be able to go and NOT feel self-concious.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/21/04 - 9:36:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
Fine by me. I wouldn't go there though.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/21/04 - 9:38:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think it's great that they have a place to go. Even though it seems like they're being segregated, at least they don't have to stay home.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/21/04 - 9:40:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
I did read the article, but it still feels degrading. I agree they need to learn to socialize better but at the same time 'normal' sized people need to learn to act better.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 1/14/05 - 1:22:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are the doors and toilet seats fat-friendly there? Are the club foundations enhanced? The floor must be under a lot of drain.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 1/22/05 - 3:12:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
fat people of the world unite!!!

hehehe *i'm* fat, and *i* don't need special fat-people-places to socialize in, in order to feel comfortable.

but sure, why not ... some people are insecure, and if there's a market for it, go for it.

17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 1/26/05 - 5:06:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
What does it matter either way? It's not up to us to judge them, if people feel better that way, go for it! And I don't necessarily think it's promoting obesity or anything, cause in the end they're dancing around and exercising.... I mean, if you think it promotes obesity, then doesn't having large sized clothes also promote obesity? People can't lose weight in an instant, so why not let them feel good and secure about themselves wherever they're at at the moment.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 1/26/05 - 5:14:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
Plus, while it might not be the healthiest thing, it IS ok to be obese! Everyone's different.

Besides, what's wrong with this? If you are big, why not go where you feel good? There's usually guys there who like big girls, so it takes away the worry of being rejected for some people. I think it's nice.

17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 2/9/05 - 4:43:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think it's a good idea. If someone doesn't feel comfortable at a normal club, but they feel comfortable at these clubs more power to them. If you find the idea degrading, just go to a regular club! No one is forcing you to go to this club.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 2/9/05 - 4:52:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
I also think it's a good idea.

I'm overweight, and have felt uncomfortable at clubs. I'm not sure if I'd necessarily go to one targeted just for overweight people, but I can understand why someone would.

Dancing at clubs IS a form of excersize. It can burn tons of calories. If someone wants to dance, but doesn't feel comfortable in front of certain people, let them have their own place! People can be brutal sometimes.

17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 3/6/05 - 7:46:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
why would someone feel to fat to dance at regular clubs? my cousin weights over 400 pounds, and she goes to regular clubs like everybody else...
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 3/24/05 - 10:43:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
i tihnk this is cool!
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 3/24/05 - 11:42:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
How fat do you have to be to get in?
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 3/25/05 - 12:03:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
The people who use it seem to like it. More power to them. Dance and enjoy.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 3/25/05 - 7:54:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
i think skinny people suck, that club is a great idea
