Here in Spain we have a national standard ID card that you HAVE to have and I find it to be very very useful, and not only for the government. It guarantees no one can claim to be you and use your credit card or sign a cheque for you. Every shop in Spain requires customers to show the ID card to allow a credit card purchase. You can also use it to get a software certificate and pay your taxes over the Internet and many many other things. Seriously, I don't get way Americans and British are so reluctant to ID cards. Would anyone explain why?

^^ Because the Government cannot be trusted with any more information than they already have about us. But, on the other hand, the damage is done, so why not? I don't suppose a national ID card would hurt anything at this point.

Plus there's some Biblical thing about it that some Christians are wary about - Revelations says something about every person being ID'ed by government towards the end I think.

Well, I really don't think that it would help much more then the drivers license. But, I am always up for trying new things so maybe we should try it.

'so the government can track terrorists better? ' hmmm, not really, although I see that people don't answer the question specifically to the reason stated.

For those afraid of giving too much information to the government: A regular ID card should only have a picture, a unique number, last and first names, date and place of birth and address and, of course, lots of anti-forgery systems. That's it. That's nothing compared with the information you give when paying your taxes.

Place of birth? Why that, of all things? That would make a stalker's job easier...

You can get a state ID card. It looks just like a driver's license. My friend has it.

No national I.D. for me. Your right kiki, it is bibical. Its a way for the Anti Christ to keep tabs on you. It is the same as the number 666 that has to be put in your head or hand. It is taught that with out this number you can't buy anything. The gov. allready knows enough about you as it is. You have a tax I.D. number D.L. number,SS number and other numbers too. Being a vet I have a service number that different than my SS number(they don't give them out anymore). So NO to national I.D. number.

They wanted to introduce a card like this here in the early 80's. It didn't happen. I don't actually think that this card is a bad idea at all. It has some good points and some bad points. I honestly believe that if any Government wishes to introduce something like it they should inform the people of the facts, have seminars and debates, then have a public referendum. I realise that not everyone will attend seminars/debates or read the information provided but that's up to them.

The bill is not to create a national ID. It is to standardize the state controlled IDs (eg drivers licenses). Things like ditigal photos instead of glued on pictures would be required, or requiring proof of citizenship. Time Magazine has a good artical about it this issue. Maybe they should just look at the immigration problem. ID's don't prove much when they are faked daily.
