No one had to eat what was served in my family, but that usually meant you didn't eat.
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 10/19/04 - 3:18:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
We had to try everything. If we were at another person's house we had to try everything AND eat everything on our plates.

17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/10/04 - 5:20:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
My mom never made me eat anything I didn't like. When I see people doing this to their kids, it makes me ill.
I mean yes they need vitamins and things, but if your child severely hates a food, why not give them something else for their vitamin needs, rather then force them to eat gross food?
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/10/04 - 5:21:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't recall being served anything that I didn't want to try...
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/10/04 - 5:24:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
"why not give them something else "
Perhaps because they want to promote some diversity by exposing their kid to new things and not be a picky eater. Perhaps because they aren't running a restaurant--everyone eats what is served.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/10/04 - 8:14:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
They don't have to eat it, I won't force them, but I won't make anything else for their meal. It's this or starve.

As for basic vegies, I never force fed my kids but I always just put a little on their plates each night. Eventually they tried it and now eat most things. My rule is that you can't say you don't like it without trying it. If you do and you it makes you gag, then fair enough.

My parents did both depending on the mood that they were in.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/10/04 - 8:44:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
Fortunately, my parents never forced me to eat anything, though I'm really not sure how exactly I grew out of my "picky eater" phase so easily.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 11/11/04 - 1:49:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
God, I don't know HOW many times I sat for hours over a plate of liver until I managed to gag down every bite...or my mothers garbage soup that tasted as if she used real garbage in it
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/17/04 - 9:27:59 PM EST (GMT-5)

17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 1/29/05 - 10:32:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
I was spoiled maybe... because if I didn't want to try something I didn't have to and something else was made for me.
Could explain why I am a bit of a picky eater now..
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 1/30/05 - 10:00:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
We didn't have to eat everything, but if we didn't we got no dessert. That was when I was young, and all I wanted was mac and cheese. As I got older, if there was a food I truly did not like (brussel spouts, for instance) then no, I wasn't forced, I was given a choice. Thats the same way I am rasing my kids.
