I'll take the baby. Saving someone's life is much more important than saving a billion dollars.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 8:52:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
They can always print more money.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 8:54:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
The baby...
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 9:14:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
Is the billion tax free? I'd probably save the money
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 9:17:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
Besides, a billion dollars might be heavy enough to pull you down with them instead.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 11:03:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
The baby. I'd risk my own life for my own children.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:24:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
deffinately the baby. i would risk my own life for any child.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:25:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
the baaaby..
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:26:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depends, is it Bill Gates' baby?
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:33:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
The baby, of course. Babies are cute.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:40:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
Uncle: I didn't say it was your own child. Perhaps I should have clarified it was someone elses child.

As for me, the fact that it was spur of the moment would cause me to save the baby. My instincts are often stupidly heroic.

However if I had the time to think and control my natural impulses with overwhelming logic I'd save the money.

Saving the child I save one life. With that money however I could save and improve hundreds to thousands of lives...

Still I know myself and I could not watch the baby fall to it's death... I'm not a coldly logical machine...

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:48:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
If it was my own child, I'd obviously save the child no questions asked. I'd hope such would be a natural assumption. Which is why I said a baby, not your baby.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:56:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
The baby...but I'd hope for a big reward!
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 12:57:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well of course I'm spider man so I would save them both with my webs. Right, that's what I'd do.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 1:00:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, you didn't say we were risking losing our own lives, either, wolf_boy. I said I'd risk my own life for my own children. I'd save any baby over any amount of money. No need to apply your so-called "logic" to it at all. A billion dollars won't inherently save anyone's life. It won't cure cancer. It won't stop a bullet. It won't stop future babies from falling into volcanos. It is offensive to suggest otherwise.

"deffinately the baby. i would risk my own life for any child."
Yeah, that's a noble thing to say, liz_wins. Where would you draw the line? 8 month olds? 2 year olds? 9 year olds? How about anyone under the age of 18, as long as they look wholesome? Why stop at children? Why not say you'd die for anyone?

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 1:07:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
No a billion dollars won't inherently save anyones life. However with that money you can save lives. Cancer isn't the only way people die. They die of starvation, they die from illness they don't have the money to cure. They die from many different things. You could help people afford higher education so they could become doctors and researchers and through their education help save many others. You could do so many things with that billion dollars.

I'd still save the baby, but if I logically wanted to do the most good for the world itself overall I'd save the money and use it wisely for the benefit and care of others and helping improve the world.

Thing is I'm not that kind of guy, I can't just stand there while someone else is in danger. I'd save the baby.

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 1:21:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd have to go with the baby, out of instinct.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 2:07:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
"...if I logically wanted to do the most good for the world itself overall I'd save the money..."
You're basically saying that "logically" a billion dollars is worth more than a life. I disagree and am disgusted that you'd think so. I would "logically" much rather put my faith in that one child's ability to create billions and billions of dollars of good in the world, not to mention the immeasurable worth of his or her own life, than to buy your completely illogical "logic."
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:27:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
hmmm I've attempted to post three responses and each time the net crashed on me... I'm not writing it all again... Screw it, whatever Uncle.

I'm not actually comparing money to human life, but potential possibilities and their possible overall effect on the overall improvement of life for the many rather than the one. I'll leave it at that cause I need to go to bed and I absolutely despise having to redo sh*t over and over again...

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:28:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
53% of men said 'money.' No way-they think they are being tough but it would never happen like that when your instinct kicks in.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:32:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree GlennH. Like I said, I'd save the baby, I voted save the baby. However logically it is not a clear cut question.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:33:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
the 'logical' point is a good one though if you had a bit longer to think about it, you could probably save a million babies from disease and starvation if you invested the money in certain projects in Africa etc.

this sort of problem is a reality everyday, if everyone really thought a single life was worth infinite money then cars would be banned for a start. Then cigarettes, tall buildings, x-rays, electricity........

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:39:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd save either way, but gosh, do I get to keep the baby?!
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:39:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Someone else sees where this question is supposed to be going. How much is a human life worth? We as a society sacrifice hundreds of human lives everyday for far less than a billion dollars.

Yet saving the billion dollars and using it to do good is considered worse than not saving the baby simply because with one we did it directly rather than indirectly with others doing our dirty work for us.

17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 9/12/04 - 7:42:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's more selfish for me, as I do not wish to watch a baby fall into lava.
