Given a good reason I could, and I'm fairly confident I could beat most but the biggest or most trained attack dogs.

If you are under attack from a dog, you need to remember this. You are bigger and heavier (unless the dog is particularly big or you are particularly small). So if you play it right and don't panic, you should stand a fair chance. You are slower so unless there is safe refuge very nearby, running is not a good option. Besides that leaves your defense open in the back. You are a human and he is a dog, you are smarter, and you have the ability to grab and punch. All you really have to avoid is the teeth or letting him pounce you to the ground. In case you are ever attacked by a dog, stand firm, maybe even advance on him to give him the impression that you are more than just prey. There are two main methods after that, the dog will go after your neck, but if you hold your hand out he will go for that instead. It will hurt, but as long as he is biting your hand, he isn't biting anything more important. The other hand is then free to go for his throat, or to punch his head.

The other method is to kick him as he comes into range, it is probably more difficult to achieve, but it spares your hand. The most important thing is to keep your cool and not panic. And to remember that against a mad dog who is going to kill you, it is a battle to the death so you mustn't be afraid to do real damage, even if you dislike the idea of hitting a dog you have the right to if he is trying to kill you.

^ Thanks, but I still feel like I might lose... It's my understanding that not many people actualy die of dog attacks; I'd rather avoid them anyway.

I could fight one, but that doesn't mean I'd win.

Of course, if there are good sticks lying around, picking one up immediately shifts the odds significantly in your favor. My advice is based on the assumption that you don't have the luxury of weapons.

If it was attacking me I could fight it... I doubt I would win, especially if it was a larger dog, but I could fight it.

ugh. a scary thought, facing a pitbull or rott. Imagine how quick it could lunge at your face with it's jaws. *shivers*

Andrew that's good and all, however I'd rather use my arm than my hand for multiple reasons, it helps me get a better position to acquire holds and grabs that I can use to incompacititate the dog, plus the dog will only have hold of my ark for a few seconds anyway uless it wants to snap it's neck. Once the dog has your arm, grabbing it's two front legs and pulling them to the side and lifting quickly is easy. Then if you move quickly you can get on top of the dog, which will generally end the fight with all but the biggest dogs quickly. Trained attack dogs are a bit harder though, as they generally will be smarter than to latch onto your arms and will perform a multiple bite, which means attempting this arm maneuver might be dangerous as the dog might grab, then the second you drop launch for your throat. Just be readdy for it and that's easily prevented. I spent a lot of time figuring how to have a chance against any animal I might get stuck in mortal combat with.

I place my chances against all but the biggest trained attack dogs at about 95 % It's the great cats, bears, elephants, and large four legged creatures like horses when my chances drop to the favor of the animal well unarmed...

Fortunately being aggressive generally works. Most times a dog tried to attack me, yelling at it and stepping toward it aggressively has ended the fight before it started. I yell "hey" which I guess makes little sense, but eh it works.
