Yes. It basically says "Women ain't tough enough to handle what we do." Now, i couldn't see a 130-pound woman going up against a 240-pound tank (football), but the underlying attitude remains disrespectful.

Yes. Some women are fit and strong enough to do certain sports as well, although not many. Although I have to say, some are so deliberaty puny and "look at me, I'm all puny" like, they bring on a negative attitude as well, since they are not considered different from other women in some peoples' eyes.

Sports promote it yes, but the sports are hardly to blame. The idea that women are weak and helpless is instilled into the players, owners, coaches etc etc long before they even think about being involved in professional sports.

Recently there have been a growing number of sexual harassment and abuse claims against footballers over here. Rape charges (that didn't make it to trial because teammates covered for eachother), visits to brothels, group sex claims, even an under 17 team that organised a fundraising night that involved strippers and oral sex as a door prize. The governing body has started setting up classes to teach players how to behave and treat women.

I was wondering if the poor attiude and morality of the players was due to the culture of team sports, or just because they are overpaid, oversexed, dumb brutes.

I think it's just because the athletes themselves are idiots, not because sports are bad.

Of course not, that's stupid.

I wonder if AussieMike was thinking about the WNBA when he asked the question.

I think it's the culture of pro sports, especially for male athletes, because they travel a lot and have access to practically anything they want.

No, I don't think the culture of proffessional team sports promote an unhealthy attitude towards women amongst the players, because, there are plenty of equally treated women on, so-called, "men" sports, as there are men, and I am one of them, so I should know.

Absolutely. It's not just the pros, either. I think the culture of a lot of team sports creates a kind of gang mentality and that hero worship of such team members leads to some very negative attitudes about women. I've seen it (and shamefully participated in it) at the middle school and high school levels.

Yeah, why do women have to play softball and not baseball. Why don't we have a women's hockey team.
17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 10/13/04 - 8:57:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
^I would love to see women play on a professional baseball team. FYI-There are women's hockey teams.

AFL moots sexual misconduct tribunal

Reading between the lines, because the police can't do anything, what with teammates giving each other alibis, the governing body of the sport will set up it's own form of justice.

The governing body that has a vested interest in keeping players out of jail.

The governing body that can't even enforce THE RULES OF ITS OWN DAMN GAME PROPERLY!!!

I say, throw the brainless bastards in jail.

Probably among the WNBA, but not other teams.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 12/16/04 - 8:24:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. The culture IMHO is fine. The reasons women don't play with men is because many of these are all sports that were deigned with men in mind and men would have an unfair advantage in many of them. As for a poor attitude toward women, that stems from the men themselves, the sport has very little if anything to blame for it.

what the hell's wrong with having an unhealthy attitude towards women anyways? i've always benefitted from it.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Sunday 12/19/04 - 3:16:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think the question is about whether women are capable of playing traditionally male sports. Its about the large numbers of sexual assault claims filed against football players, and why sexual assault seems to be more common among sports players.

I think that the problem is high levels of testosterone. I think that a lot of males who find sports appealing are more testosterone driven than others. They crave violence and sex more than other things. Sports rewards those who are testosterone driven. And when there is a group of people with similar attitudes spending that much time toghether, their attitudes all get reinforced, and made to seem acceptable.

I mean, everyone wants sex. There's nothing wrong with that. A lot of people get violent when they are angry, or when they are pumped up and excited. It happens. But some people ignore rationality and thought to feed these desires, and the rest of us just suffer with 20 different kinds of mental disorders.

Yeah I think this badly worded question is asking if a male sports team contains such an aggressive and male-centric environment and mentality, that the team members then attain an attitude towards women that is essentially misogynistic and objectifying.

I think it does, but I think a pro sports team also makes the members feel they are above societal norms, allowing them to take whatever they want, incl. women..
