Do you think non-violent drug offenders should get rehab instead of jail time, to free up some room in the prison system?

In Europe, drug addicts are treated as patients. Here, they're treated as criminals.

Yes, they should be rehabilitated instead. I mean, chances are if they go to prison they'll probably end up worse coming out than when they went in.

To quote Johnny Depp, from Blow.
"I went into prison with a bachelors degree in weed, and walked out with a master's in herion"

Also, to quote The Shawshank

"you know what's really funny? before i came here I was an honest man, and it took prison to turn me into a crook"

Anyway, yeah, when 50 percent of the prisons are populated by drug offenders, you need to search for alternatives.

"12 percent of all black men in their 20s were in jails or prisons, as were 3.7 percent of Hispanic men and 1.6 percent of white men in that age group"

it just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?

I say legalize it. That would solve all these problems.

Hell yes

I typically take a hardnosed stance towards punishment when it comes to those who break the law, but I definitely think that rehab is the way to go with nonviolent druggies. However, repeat offenders who go through rehab and continue to do drugs should be jailed.
17 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Thursday 5/27/04 - 2:33:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
Why should anybody go to jail for hurting nobody but them selves. I think all laws that protect us from are selves should be dropped. Everybody should be able to do what they want unless they hurt somebody.

yes, that would be smart and it would give them hope for a futur

Rehab's sooo expensive..
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 7/11/04 - 9:20:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah. But it should be for a first offense or something.

^ another thing the government could be spending money on, instead of bombing foreign countries.

I think this is a great plan.

I've been going on about this for years. Although I'm not sure rehab is the answer, because from what I've witnessed, it's just as easy to get drugs in rehab and jail as it is on the street.

It would still be better to try to give them a little counseling and intervention rather than throwing them in jail. But yeah, you have to really want to help yourself,no one can make you clean up your act.
Taxes pay for jails, right? Why not invest some of the money into transferring drug offenders in rehab rather than jail, spread it out?
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 7/25/04 - 4:39:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
they should chop off a finger or arm and let you go after a few times getting caught you wont have hands to buy dope with

They should have a chance at rehab - if they screw it up then they should be incarcerated and be given treatment while locked up.

California passed a law so that drug offenders could go to rehab instead of prison.

Now, there aren't enough rehap slots for them.

I'll bet rehab is cheaper per person than jail is - so fund it!

Someone very close to me is in prison because of drugs. He had to go a three year rehab programme before entering prison.

Much as I hate the fact that he is in prison, he is there for a reason and he has to pay for his mistakes. I think obligating him to go to rehab first though is an excellent way of helping a person and THEN punishing them for their mistakes. It seems like the best solution.

And Kiki, a non-violent drug offender can also harm other people by selling them drugs. They could in fact be accused of murder if a client dies of an overdose or from taking "bad" drugs. They are not harmless at all, and until they are fully rehabilitated they should not be allowed to walk free.

The reason non-violent drug offenders go to prison is largely to boost the stocks of prison companies, which make campaign contributions to BOTH parties in the USA.

In Canada, until we yielded to American pressure, drug addicts were 'sick' and not 'criminals' here too, like in Europe.

Of course, of course, locking up non violent offenders beggars belief.

Wanderer - rehab IS cheaper than jail, because to rehabilitate a marijuana smoker basically involves tell him not to do it anymore. Certain drugs that require extensive rehab require that before entering prison anyway, making the jail sentence afterward moot. (prison IS supposed to be rehabilitation) But non-violent criminals dilute down the harder-to-handle criminals, which cost considerably more to keep locked up.

My mother just got out of jail in California. She was in a rehab program that was still considered jail for a little over a year. She is not a violent person whatsoever. She did not need to be in jail, locked up with violent offenders. But my mom has come out a much better person. I KNOW rehab is better than prison. It would most definetly free up room in the prisons.

yes, definently
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 11/24/04 - 4:05:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, we need to reintroduce capital punishment - that'll provide room in the jails.

I guess AndrewHowe must be from Washington, with all the tweekers. Meth addicts are the only "druggies" who I genuinely see as hopeless.
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/9/05 - 12:31:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
Whenever there is a chance at rehabilitation, it should be taken IMMEDIATELY!
Both with druggies and juvenile offenders. Why waste lives in a prison when you can turn them around and make them productive?
