Were Romeo and Juliet really in love or was that just infatuation, considering the whole play takes place within a week?

good question.

I'll say love.

The fact that it's fiction allows me to believe that they were what they and Shakespeare believed they were.

Cynically, though, I'm like...ok, 2 kids "fall in love" in a short time span...Yeah right.

I'll say infatuation. They were just kids, and knew each other a week. Love, my ass.

^^I agree...Considering they were all played by men.

lol i missed the comma too

Yea its true back in the day all plays only had male actors. No big deal. Just no live nude scenes like in Hair.

The infatuation phase happens during the first 6 months you know someone. It couldn't have been true love.

I dont think the fact that they were young had anything to do with wheather or not they were in love. The part about it taking place in a week makes me say it was deffantly infatuation.

Camelboy got it. They are fictional and therefore they were exactly what The Bard wanted them to be.

Look at this way. They were teenagers pumped full of raging hormones. They couldn't have cared less if they were 'in true love' or not, they just wanted each other!

Seriously. It's the classic tragedy of love and loss. Weep and enjoy. I did enough analyzing in school.

A serious case of spontaneous lust.

Up to the moment he met Juliet, Romeo was "in love" with Rosaline. He was 17 and probably quite horny. Consider that Juliet was a sheltered 14 year old. I think the underlying point was to show that love doesn't happen that quickly. Shakespeare was just so great with words that he could make a satirical point like that and spark a discussion hundreds of years later.

I think the fact that each was willing to die to be with the other escalate the relationship out of the infatuation phase. Because damn Ive been infatuated, never to the point to risk death and kill to be w/ the subject of my infatuation.

What Can't it be love? Love comes to people no matter what their age is
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/21/05 - 8:26:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
well, i can't say i've ever read the play. but romeo meets and falls in love with julliet in the space of a week? that sounds like infatuation to me. BUT dying for each other? sounds like love. i'm not sure. i'll have to read it and get back to you.

Oh god, I don't even want to think about literary analysis of shakespear today...uhhhggg....I could go into detail since this was a term paper question...well it was similar. (yes some people on this planet are 13-17 and take college classes so shut it!) Its layered with so many concepts it ought to be called the play write from hell!
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/21/05 - 8:43:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
love, definitely, c'mon they chose to see each other no matter the consequences. That's love!
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/21/05 - 8:44:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
Love can come at any age. I do agree w/Skandic.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/21/05 - 10:20:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
hmm..stylee, I do believe Romeo did have love for Rosaline but I think he had more love for Juliet.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Monday 2/21/05 - 10:21:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Juliet's love ran more truer than Rosaline's did.
17 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 3/1/05 - 11:15:15 AM EST (GMT-5)
They were teens, so it was probably lust.
