In the Italian town of Reggio Emilia, it is now officially against the law not to pamper your pets, following a new bill being passed which regards the treatment of animals in the town. The law comes into affect next week. Under the law, owners of a canary, for example, must buy the bird a companion, so it does not get lonely. Dog owners must provide suitably roomy kennels in their gardens, in a shady area. Anyone not complying with the law may be fined up to 500€. The law even covers the cooking of lobsters, it is now illegal to throw a live lobster into boiling water, they must be killed first. Should cities around the world adopt this law from Reggio Emilia in Italy, which makes it illegal to not pamper your pets?

I think it's awesome! My town could use this law, the rednecks around here chain their dogs up in the backyard and forget about them.

I don't think just because you don't "pamper" your pet, that it's not loved or taken care of...

I think making sure they are happy and healthy should be the main concern...not that they're pampered.

Reggio Emilia incorporates a lot of extreme ideas and methods and it's a fad that will change when the Political Correctness of this world begins to die down and people start acting normal again.

Here in Australia, Kindergartens have adopted the Reggio Emilia method of letting pre-schoolers do as they damn well please during a class as it's meant to enforce their idea of self awareness and is supposed to encourage self motivation. After sitting in on a few of these classes, I can guarantee that all it enforces is a 'free for all' amongst four year olds who become increasingly upset because they are mostly meant to be coping alone.

These types of ideas are fine in theory but all life needs some type of dicipline. Even pets.

Ok, taking care of your pets is all well and good and a law enforcing that I could see. But who ever is behind this law has lost their mind.

I don't think allowing birds to flock or not boiling an animal to death is pampering. It's simply preventing animal abuse.

Seems just a little f*cking retarded to me.

As presented in the story, that law will be ignored within a year.

But you should have the right to kick your pet if it's being annoying =\

The people in this town must really not have lives.

I agree with estella.

Although how would one go about killing a lobster in a humane manner?

Oh god, that's absolutely outrageous Kiki

those laws seem a bit extreme, but i do think people should treat their pets/animals better that some do.
17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/2/04 - 12:44:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^ i think it is extreme too. Not everyone can afford to build their dog a kennel, but they can still love their animals and give them a good life. I just think there should be worse punishments and more laws against animal abuse.
17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/2/04 - 12:48:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
That is kind of ridiculous. Are people going to go around and have pet inspection? I can see it now : "What are you in for?" "Manslaughter, how about you?" "I didn't buy my dog an expensive enough hair brush."
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 10/6/04 - 3:30:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Pets are all alot of people have. My mother in law's dog is loved more than my husband!!
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 10/6/04 - 4:10:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I am so afraid to ask: PlanetClaire, what do you mean by that?
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 10/30/04 - 11:14:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
Ummmm, no.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 10/30/04 - 11:18:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's extreme, but the buying two birds makes sense, pets do ge lonely.
But no, people would ignore it.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 11/2/04 - 11:37:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
Who really cares?
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/27/04 - 1:20:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. Though I do believe that you should pamper your animals because they are your babies and your friends all at once and you should take care of them. BUT I also know that not everyone has enough money to buy their dogs roomy kennels and stuff like that. So...no.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/27/04 - 3:15:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
This law is so stupid I can't even give it a sarcastic answer.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/11/04 - 1:06:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
Huh? what?
So if you don't abuse your pet, then it's called pampering? What's the ogic in these words?

If you can't give your pet a decent shelter and don't want to give your social pet a companion you shouldn't get a pet at all!
It's a life and you should live up to the responsibility you take!
