jarhead, why not tell us all about Sidhartha Gautama, seeing as (as usual) you're so knowledgeable on the topic?

I'm not sure where Buddha fits into the grand scheme of Hinduism and Buddhism.

According to what Wanderer said, I suppose they are.

i agree with Wanderer, there is no comparison between Jesus and Buddha. Buddha was a spiritual leader, but only human. Jesus, while human, was the Son of God incarnate.

So how does Zoroaster figure into this whole deal? Perhaps Zoroaster is to the Sikhs what Jim Jones is to the Moonies.

In all seriousness, yes Jesus was a Jew around which a Jewish sect (called the Jesus Movement) was formed eventually becoming its own distinct religion. And yes, the Buddha Gautama was a Hindu around which a sect developed eventually forming the core of Buddhism.

Both the historical Jesus and Buddha would have never imagined that major world religions would center on their teachings nor the impact their lives would have on the world.

You dumbass, Buddah was a real person, and he was hindu, not the other way around.

"Somedaysoon - in case I sounded like I was nitpicking about the spelling, I didn't mean to, I just wrote it for you since you weren't sure about it. :)"

I didn't think you were No worries.

If Buddah was sent to save the elect of God, like Jesus was made a human and born virgin birth then yes Buddah is like Jesus.

There aren't many perfect analogies in life; most things are apples and oranges... except they're not. See?
There are some similarities here: If Buddhists seek to have a little Buddha inside of them, Christians seek to have the Holy Spirit in them. Jesus and Buddha are the most recognizable images of their respective religions.

I think it's a very faulty analogy, because Jesus was a man and Buddha is the core of every person (to those who believe, of course). We will all become one at some point and there are already several Buddhas, e.g. Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and Amogasiddhi. Which one are we comparing to Jesus?

I don't understand why there's always such a need for a comparison, even when it's clearly far fectched.

i don't know anything about eastern religions.

but i think, they, and Christianity, are far too different to be able to compare easily.

no, not entirely. they are actually pretty different

"Is Jesus to Judaism and Christianity as Buddha is to Hinduism and Buddhism? "

It's an interesting analogy, but not perfectly linear. It's kind of a flawed SAT question.

There seems to be an underlying thought to this, though it's not clear what.

All I can say:

My understanding is that Jesus was a Jew who tried to restore the religion, trying to bring them back to God's way.

Buddha, was Hindu, seeking enlightenment and escape from suffering, and found that his religion didn't do this, so he found a new way.

So, they both started from their original religions and created new ones. If that's all that's being asked , then "yes".

But of course there's a lot of details, many arguable, that don't necessarily match up. But is that relevant for this question? Dunno.
