Yes, I think so...if you want to lose weight, eat
less. If eating fewer carbs makes that easier
for you, fine, but I don't think there's anything
magical about cutting down on carbs...
my opinion only, not guaranteed to be right...

Yes, it's definitely a fad. I personally believe its scientific basis, though. It's a very difficult (at least for me) diet to follow because it does have you give up pasta, bread, and other awesome carbohydrate-saturated food.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 2/13/04 - 8:16:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
yeah .. its crazy. its really not good for you either. you need carbs!! its brain food!

All diets are just fads for fat lazy dipsh*ts who don't realize that you can eat whatever the hell you want as long as you don't gorge yourself and you have a semi rigirous work out plan.

Join a god damn gym

The thing that confuses me about Atkins is the "eat as much bacon as you want" thing. If they come out with an "eat as much ice cream as you want" diet, then I'm on board.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 2/13/04 - 8:21:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, I don't think it's a fad. Its effects are being seeing all across the country in the types of food offered, from breads in supermarkets to Burger King meals. In addition, Atkins has been around since the seventies. I believe the high-carb/low-fat craze was extremely damaging to American health, and that the Atkins diet is an extreme reaction to it. The South Beach Diet and the Zone also contribute to the deemphasis of carbs in a diet, so I really think of it as here to stay. It's common knowledge now--don't eat a lot of carbs.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 2/13/04 - 8:22:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
yeah but it went away in the 70's too because peple realized it wasnt very good
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 2/13/04 - 8:26:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
Why did it come back then?
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 2/13/04 - 8:27:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
they're like those trolls with the jewel in the belly. they go away and come back then go away and come back. both evil

Ha, well maybe. But I do know that America as a whole has tried to reduce the amount of fat it eats while upping its carb intake (since the nineties), and as a nation we have gotten fatter.

It's my opinion that effective weight loss is an extremely complicated hormonal process. I think we try to tell ourselves these very simple guidlines about excercising more and eating less, but I find that naive. I want that science behind it, and what I admire about Atkins and the Zone is the way they've presented very detailed information about insulin reactions to the American public. Our diets, as a nation, are never going to be the same. I think that's great.

it really has caused a lot of people to lose weight and thats really good but you need carbs for your brain. i mean atkins himself died of head trama.

there is a sience behind it though. if you eat more calories then you burn in a day you'll gain weight. if you eat equal you'll stay the same. if you eat less calories then you burn you'll lose weight. you only need a certain amount of calories really and its actually quite a lot.

Reminds me of a joke, I love this: The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the
British or Americans.

On the other hand, the French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart
attacks than the British or Americans.

The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than
the British or Americans.

However, the Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer
fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

Conclusion: Eat & drink what you like. It's speaking English that kills
you.

I think the specific diet itself is somewhat of a fad, like all diets. Now, the ideas it brings out about how to eat will probably have a lot of staying power.

I think almost everything is "just a fad" No one ever has good enough ideas that they'll stick around forever..

Well, I am completely anti-atkins. I mean, of course everyone knows that a diet of double bacon cheeseburgers and chili cheese fries is healthy. And, yes, you will lose weight from the Atkins diet and you will drop weight even faster after you keel over from a heart attack at age 40. If you don't buy that, ask the worms who are on the Atkins diet now.
I saw Jack Lalanne on TV on his 1950s show. He said that to lose weight, now get this, you need to eat a balanced diet and exercise! Wow! Who knew?! That is quite a concept. Jack was waaaaayyy ahead of his time.
