'It will link Australia's economy with the biggest economy in the world and an economy whose importance to Australia will grow rather than diminish,' Mr Howard said. 'This was a once in a generation opportunity.'

Mr Howard vowed to travel the country selling the overall benefits of the deal. 'If I'd walked away from this because of sugar, that wouldn't have advantaged the sugar people at all and it would have, I believe, robbed many other Australian industries of advantages that they are entitled to have,' he said.

There was strong support for the agreement among business groups. 'The agreement should be welcomed by everyone with an interest in Australia's long-term economic growth,' said the president of the Business Council of Australia, Hugh Morgan.

Admittedly I didn't read the link, but I'd say beware these free trade deals with the U.S. We tend to stick a lot of clauses in there that benefit us and not whomever is on the other end of the deal. Australia probably has more bargaining power than some south american countries, but next to the pressure of a US economy, you might find its not all you had hoped for.

It's not exactly a "free trade" agreement and in any case American lawyers have a tendency to make one word mean a completely different thing that it was designed to mean once a paper containing it enters their hands.

It's actually a prevalent practise here on YT too.

In the long run it wil not be a good deal. Somehow these free trade deals are never free. Maybe for the U.S. but nobody else.

John Howard will do absolutely anything that George Bush tells him to. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's an embarrassment. I wish him gone. I become agitated every time I see him mug on the tv and have to refrain from hurling abuse at him.

BE GONE, LITTLE JOHNNY! BE GONE!

I crave for leadership under Mark Latham.

I agree Howard is a complete fool, look at the size of the US economy and their companies, they'll be walking and dictating all the rules for their benefits, and what companies from Australia would go to the US and try to have any influence, nil.

yes maybe

The Australian Federal Election is being held on the 9th of October. Could it be? Could it be that John Howard has finally dug himself a whole deep enough to be buried in? Let's hope it's not turned around and we find he's in fact shovelled a dirt mound for Costello to stand on.
