i was reading a book on lingiustic theory that said that speaking 'in tongues' had all the tell tale signs of a manafactured language and not one hint of anything alien to Indo-European languages.

Does anyone actually believe it has some spiritual origin?

I think God gives some people the gift. Infact there is proof, when my mom was a young adult she was at her friends house and she started praying to God while speaing in tongues. She was asking God to give my mom the gift, but my mom didn't want it. I mean, it's useless without love.

18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:18:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
The Bible tells what? And besides, that's subjective.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:24:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
The Bible explains what speaking in tongues is in Acts Chapter 2.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:24:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:25:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
how is that "explaning " it?
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:25:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
If you don't want to read all that (though I encourage you to do so!) speaking in tongues is the outward manifestation of the Holy Ghost (God's spirit inside you). When people speak in tongues, you begin to speak in a language you've never learned before.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:26:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
you still havent answered kyrys question.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:27:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well, in the beginning of the text, we read that people are filled with the Holy Ghost. Then we read that the on-lookers are amazed b/c the people are speaking their own languages, languages they'ev (the ones being filled w/ the Holy Ghost) never learned before in their lives.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:29:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
You mean how do you idetify when someone else is speaking in tongues? You actually see and hear them speak in an unknown language. When you it happens to you... it's awesome!... Let me explain how I know... ok? I will be praying earnestly, and then I start to feel the power of God, I begin to "lose control" of what I'm trying to say, and I start speaking in a language I've never spoken before. It's a very wonderful experience.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:30:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well, what language was it?
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/11/03 - 11:33:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't know what language it was (Oh, and just to clarify, I've spoken in tongues more than once... Probably hundreds of time. Tt happens very often for some people.)

There is a lady in my church who seems to consistently speak in an Oriental language, though I have no idea which one or anything. It just sounds like that.
