FREMONT - A Kennedy High School English teacher is on leave this week after using a racist term for blacks - apparently by accident - while addressing some students in her class. Teacher Malti Massey let the word slip while using the rhyme 'eeny, meeny, miney, moe' to choose a student to take a note to the main office earlier this month. Current versions of the old rhyme use the word 'tiger' instead of the offensive term.

Two of the students who overheard the exchange are black. Realizing she had said something inappropriate, the teacher immediately apologized. She then explained that she had learned that version of the poem as a child in another country - India, students said - and hadn't realized until then that it contained the derisive word.

Attempts to reach Massey were unsuccessful. Whatever the reason the word was said, it never should have been uttered by a teacher, the two black students and their parents said. They say they want to see the teacher reprimanded in some way. Despite their outrage, neither family is convinced that Massey, who they said is an Indo-American, is racist...

that's really lame, and people are being way too sensitive. it was an accident! that one thing doesnt make her a racist.

HAHA! On the question forum, it says "Should this teacher have been suspended for her accidental use of the word 'I am an idiot'?"
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/1/03 - 7:09:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
Lmao! That was great! i was wondering why she should be suspended for calling herself an idiot!
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/1/03 - 7:11:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
In a way she was though!
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/1/03 - 7:26:22 AM EST (GMT-5)
She should have been more carefull, being in a position of authority and all, but nothing should happen to her.
I remember my dad said the exact same thing when I was really young and I shouted at him for it, but he's not racist.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Saturday 11/1/03 - 8:19:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't know if she should have been suspended, but she really needs to watch what she says.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Sunday 11/9/03 - 10:23:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
"outraged"? That's sounds like sensitive to me.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 11/13/03 - 9:56:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
So silly. It isn't like she was calling a student that. I wonder too if it were a black student who said that would they get suspended? Probably not.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 11/13/03 - 10:01:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. I would suspend her if she refused to apologize or was malicious about using the term, but she apologized and explained why she made the mistake.
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/4/03 - 7:48:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe a suspension will be okay, but I highly doubt she is a racist. That term is used very loosely these days, and I wish it wasn't.

Pinche bolillos
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/8/03 - 9:41:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
damn, people are overly sensitive and need to lighten up. Damn, whatever happened to free speech.
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Wednesday 1/21/04 - 9:19:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's pretty crappy for her to get suspended for something petty like that {since it was an accident} but, hey the kids got a sub for a while....sounds good to me
18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Wednesday 1/21/04 - 9:30:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
no. public education is stupid, and while i am grateful for having gotten an education, i am more than happy to have graduated from it, just so i don't have to deal with crap like this.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 1/29/04 - 6:42:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
oh thats really quite sad for the teacher
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 1/29/04 - 6:53:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think a suspension is harsh, since she appears apologetic and her students don't think she is really a racist, but it's ultimately a pretty small price to pay for a mistake that is pretty offensive.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 1/29/04 - 10:17:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think she should be fired, but I hope she learned a lesson herself. As a teacher she should definitely be more aware of what she says.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 2/8/04 - 10:48:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
ive heard that word in that rhyme before, thats no mere slip of the tongue
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 2/9/04 - 8:14:15 AM EST (GMT-5)
You've heard that word in the rhyme before because that's how the rhyme goes - the slip of the tongue came because she forgot to say tiger instead of n*gger.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 2/9/04 - 8:53:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think that it is a wacked out case. come on ppl...I am a racist! can mean ignorance. and well that's how i use it on a day to day basis. so just grow up.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 2/9/04 - 9:03:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
Huh, I never knew that. I always heard it tiger. I wonder, does affirm the fact that I'm not a racist, or just mean I'm ignorant?
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 2/9/04 - 9:23:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's tiger in these days, but she's our parent's age. Back then it was 'n*gger'. She also came from another country, they may not EVER use tiger there.
18 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Friday 2/27/04 - 1:16:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
This teacher is not racist, why should she be fired. She accidently slipped up, everyone does eventually. My grandmother in fact taught me the original version of the rhyme, fortunately i was taught better than to use the term but did accidently slip up once. Its hard not to once something is pounded into you like that.
18 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 3/4/04 - 6:11:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
of course not! it was just an accident, and she did apologize.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Sunday 4/4/04 - 3:14:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
everything these days is politically incorrect. you can't say anything without being yelled at cause it offends somebody. that's bullpoo. everyone should just get over themselves and cut the poo.
