PITTSBURGH — Tommy Chong, who played one half of the dope-smoking duo in the Cheech and Chong movies, was sentenced to nine months in federal prison and fined $20,000 Thursday for selling bongs and other drug paraphernalia over the Internet. The 65-year-old was allowed to remain free until federal prison officials tell him in a few weeks where he must report to prison.

Chong also forfeited about $100,000 for his arrest on federal drug paraphernalia charges. He'll spend a year on probation after he's released from prison. His Nice Dreams Enterprises, which made a line of marijuana bongs and pipes, was to be sentenced later Thursday. Under federal law, the business itself can be placed on probation or face other sanctions.

Chong pleaded guilty in May to conspiring to sell drug paraphernalia and pleaded guilty on behalf of Nice Dreams Enterprises, which did business under the name Chong Glass...

Yeah, when did it become illegal to sell bongs? Tobacco use only of course.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/11/03 - 3:49:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
WHAT?
those are waterpipes for smoking tobacco.
everyone knows that.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/11/03 - 8:40:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
Man, he looks ripped in that picture. I don't think he should've been charged or fined at all. I think all the people who worry about cracking down (no pun intended) on drug paraphernalia are just stupid. You don't want us to smoke pot? Charge us for selling it. I think bongs, and pipes and stuff along that line can really be a form of art. And I think we should let him make his living the way he wants. He's not selling drugs.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/11/03 - 8:46:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
HE's a lovable dope smokin hippy. Just let him be.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Thursday 9/11/03 - 8:55:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree-he should be left alone, and returned to the cast of 'That 70's Show'.
He is being singled out because he is famous.

If he broke the law he should take his lumps. Even though I enjoyed his Cheech and Chong movies and has celebrity status he should NOT be excempt. You and I would not be.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Friday 9/12/03 - 8:49:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
He never broke the law, deshep. There's headshops everywhere. His pipes are sold in all of them
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 9/20/03 - 1:59:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
How the drat? Damn man. What's the world coming to when 1/2 of Cheech and Chong gets arrested for selling paraphernalia?
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 9/24/03 - 9:10:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
ha! yeah, like jail will be a punishment. he'll be worshipped in there.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 9/24/03 - 9:13:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
It is stupid, it's not like he was selling pot. He was just selling the things you can put pot or tobacco in.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 9/24/03 - 9:23:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think drug paraphernalia charges are crap because it's entirely based on opinion if it was sold as art or with intent of use. Go after the drugs, not the bongs... geez. So I'm not giving him celebrity benefits by saying that he shouldn't go to jail.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 9/25/03 - 1:10:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think we did this in generals a while ago.

The loophole in the law that allows drug paraphinia to be sold legally is that it is sold for decorative purposes or for use with tobbacco.

If the paraphinalia is openly advertized for drug use then an offence is committed.

Once high profile figures started acting like the law can't touch them they usually find it can.

18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 9/25/03 - 5:15:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yet another stupid law that sends an innocent person to jail. Go USA!
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 9/25/03 - 8:52:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
40oz, there is no 'bailing out' of prison. You only bail someone out before their trial, not after they were sentenced. He IS going to prison and there isn't anything he can do about it but appeal for a shorter sentence.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 9/25/03 - 9:04:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
He's an old guy
They should go after real hard criminals instead
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 9/25/03 - 9:33:41 AM EST (GMT-5)
Poor Chong.

He should be exempt of any legal ramifications to his actions short of rape and murder just for his high rating on the Coolness Scale.

18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Thursday 10/9/03 - 4:19:43 AM EST (GMT-5)
Is the pope Jewish?
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 10/24/03 - 8:24:34 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think they should've arrested him at all. We have concerts here in SC and they sell bongs everywhere. Especially at the rock concerts. I've seen them. So if you're going to arrest him, then arrest us all. I mean, seriously. Buying or selling it shouldn't be a crime. It's up to you whether you want to use it illegally.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 10/24/03 - 8:46:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
It is a ridiculous thing in this case.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 10/24/03 - 8:48:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
This one should've been left alone. He was only nailed because he's Chong.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 10/24/03 - 8:58:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm sure the streets would be much safer with that menace Tommy Chong locked away.
I mean nobody is as much of a threat than a pothead.
why don't we try to fight some real crime.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 10/24/03 - 9:02:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
^^I hate weed and all, but I have a lot of pot-smoking friends that are great. They go to work to earn a living like anyone. Agreed.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 10/27/03 - 1:28:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
no - he's a cool cat.
