I say yes, but only because English is already the international language of the sea and the air.

If not for that, I would want a language that was easier to learn than English.

I don't think so. Fewer people these days are willing to conduct business in English.

18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:22:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Richly: That's only due to the size of the country.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:25:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
So? It doesnt matter what the reason is, it doesnt change the fact that more people speak Mandarin then any other language.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:29:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure I would totally agree with that statement. Mandarin is probably the most popular first language, but I would argue that English is the second language of even more people.

I think Spanish is one of the easiest to learn. If we had to switch that would probably be what I would want to switch to. English is very very difficult to learn as a second language.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:36:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are those referring to native language or does it count all the people of non English speaking countries that speak English as a second language?
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:37:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Its just people that SPEAK it..wether it is the first or second or third or forth or whatever language they speak.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:38:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
I suspect that there are over 500 million people in India alone that can speak English.

Ah, here:

"You probably learnt a bit of French at school, but everyone speaks English
nowadays, so what's the point of learning foreign languages?"

From: www.zompist.com/pomcult.html

That was easy.

18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 1:48:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Is that in the world or just Canada? I know that we learn French in school here and that they learn Spanish in U.S. I also know that in other parts of the world they dont learn French in school. And I know that no, EVERBODY does not speak English. Only in Canada, U.S., Australia and Britan EVERYBODY speaks English. Or rather, EVERYBODY is supposed to know how to speak English because thats the language you speak over there!
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 2:05:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I really hate it when people say everyone speaks English
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 2:05:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually, English is the offical language of Nigeria. It is also an official language of South Africa, not to mention many other countries.

If you go to Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, they all speak great English. It's probably the most international language.
